I will probably get a lot of flaming from you mac fanbois but darn this OS is overrated. I had a hundred fanbois tell me how amazing OS X is before I bought my MBP 13"...I was a bit skeptical but they were so convinced I sorta started believing them. Then I get my laptop and I'm expecting this heavenly OS. Guess what, all I got was windows with a shiny new coat...

I've had a system crash (check)
I have to wait longer than I want to boot up (check)
It comes with crappy programs (sorta..."preview" is sick but safari and itunes suck!Ok granted safari is better than IE but then what browser isn't)
Cant fullscreen firefox without hacks (check)
Its just an OS(check, nothing revolutionary)

Really the best thing I've found about OS X are the icons on the top right (bluetooth, wireless etc). Really...thats where it ends. Its more stable than windows but not by much. I think people that have macs think its a lot more stable because they run like 2 apps at the same time in OS x while they usually run 99 apps on windows. I had a crash when I had a Windows 7 VM, skype, adium, itunes, firefox, word, excel and a network copy happening. I have 8gb ram so that should not be a problem but it still crashed.

Sorry this is a bit of a rant but it can basically be summarized by saying that I'm not more happy with OS X than windows. I dont know much about Snow Leopard but I really hope they make some changes. Like better stability, more use for my ram and better battery life (not that my average 5 hours is bad).

*this is still the best electronic gadget I have bought in the last couple of years. Really its ridiculous. R14k well spent!!!!

OSX

I'm not a mac fan, but OSX is built ontop of a *NIX like OS. The real power, like with linux, is in the CLI, and it is pretty powerful in that regard.

The most annoying thing about OSX is the mouse acceleration, it has an acceleration curve which means if you physically move the mouse 2x faster, the cursor will actually move e.g. 2.1x faster. This is very frustrating if you come from a windows/linux environment.

You may have buggy RAM. Use Rember to check your RAM:
http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/

Otherwise Mac OSX should not require a reset if a rogue app goes bad.

I find Leopard marginally better than Tiger, however I found Tiger to be significantly better than Windows.

I take it that you bought the LATEST 13" MBP. As memory serves me correctly, they are very unstable running 8GB RAM, the best and most stable tested was 6GB but even more stable is 4GB.

I only reboot my MBP 15" at last ONCE a week. When I dont use it I just close the lid. If the battery fails, just plug in the power cable. I hardly ever shut down my MBP. When I go out - close the lid and pop it into my case.

No OS comes with real workable/production software like OSX, but you have to admit that better software does come with OSX - iLife (iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD, iMovie and garageband). Safari is way better than IE - I develop websites and they always look perfect in Safari and Firefox but then it's ONLY IE that I need to fix/tweak code to get it working right. Also, the control panel / System Preferences on OSX is way easier than Windows. iTunes is a much better music player than Windows Media Player.

Firefox DOES scale fullscreen without plugins - I tested it. Also, remember that most websites today are designed with a width limit so if your browser is full screen then you have all that other wasted space which gives you QUICKER access to windows behind, if not your desktop. Try dragging and dropping a picture from a website to the Desktop with a full screen browser. This is why most apps dont run full screen - its all about drag and drop with OSX.

In time you will appreciate OSX more once you get used to the way things are done in OSX. Expose is REALLY handy, especially if you set it to activate at the corners of the screen.

Use OSX the way it was intended to and not the way you used to use Windows. Thats the biggest problem most switchers have.

ENJOY

PS: What about no antivirus software - no credit for that?

I forgot to add: I run Apache webserver, MySQL, Dreamweaver, Firefox, Skype, Adium, Photoshop, Safari (at least 10 sites open), Firefox, Parallels with XP and Windows 7 (test environment) and my BILLING app all at once - NO CRASHES. Please list for us those 99 apps that Windows runs. I even run full blown Final Cut Studio without crashes. CHANGE YOUR RAM

funny that when OSX crashes the hardware gets blamed, when windows crashes windows get blamed - even though the window's hardware could be a frankinstine mix...

Since this is a pissing contest, see this.
If OS X doesn't work for you... use something else. Nobody here really cares or cares to hear about it.;)

Yeah, your kernel panic is RAM related. Brand new system with I take it, very little new software installed wont kernel panic like that.

Open a webpage in Safari, highlight a piece of text, click on Safari (right next to the apple icon top left) Services - Speech - Start Speaking Text.

Because with a stable, seasoned OS like Leopard it's the most likely cause. ;)

I agree 100%. It is the most frustrating OS I've ever had the misfortune of working with. I use Linux (lets compare apple with apples and use two different Unix-based OSs) quite a bit and it is an absolute pleasure compare to the seventh level of hell that is OS X.

Really the best thing I've found about OS X are the icons on the top right (bluetooth, wireless etc). Really...thats where it ends. Its more stable than windows but not by much.

Linux is more stable than box OSs and Gnome, for example, has those little icons you seem quite fond of :D

Hacking and fighting, bobbing and weaving, begging and pleading - its a miracle I haven't tossed the Mac out the Window. Fortunately I am at the end of the project and only turn the bugger on to test.

And why for the love of all things green and shiny can no one, and I mean no one, tell me how to maximize a damned application?!

You see the little grey triangle bottom right in every window?, drag it.

Note: Windows has the same little triangle, and dragging and pulling and aiming and slowing is not maximising! A simple double-click, how on earth does this escape people?

So just admit to it: no right click and no maximising of windows in Mac OS X :erm:

System Preferences - Keyboard & Mouse - it's called Primary and Secondary buttons.
Not right click and left click (Apple tries to make it easier for lefties.)
