I bought the Osprey Volt 60 last year for Otter Trail
All in my gross mass was 16kg and I didn't even notice I was carrying a backpack for 5 days

Aether 70ltr is the best pack I have ever had. Out of interest, why do you want such a HUGE pack?
I already have a 55+5, so thats perfect for 2-3 days.

I want the 105 for long 10-14 hikes, and I also often have to carry quite a few things for my wife.

I also carry a normal flat pillow, which is light, but takes up space - I have learnt to never compromise on a pillow, it makes all the difference.

So I have a trail running bag, day bag, 2-3 day bag, and the final piece of the puzzle is a large bag for long traverse's.

@Pineapple Smurf - and yes, I do indeed often carry at least 750ml of Whiskey, no ways do I want to leave that behind on the long treks. Nothing like a few night caps out in the Berg

So when you are hiking in the berg for say 7 days, you need to carry a mattress, tent, and all your cooking equipment, plus extra clothes for the 4 seasons in one day, not to mention all the food. It quickly adds up, and a nice big bag helps to pack it properly. I also carry my camera and tripod. Total weight is usually between 23-25kg.

7 days and accommodation plus dop?
Then my 60 litre will get you no where
I wish I had gone 70 litre just so that I could have taken my pillow with.

I had so many beer cans on Otter Trail, I started off on 22kg.
22kg is impressive.
I started on 22kg that morning when I picked up my bag and put it on.
I was like no chance, this is crazy
So i started ditching stuff including my 2 phones and power banks
I went as light as possible and am very happy I did
I think the rule of thumb is carry one third your body weight for men and one quarter for women.

If it were a flat hike I would have gone 22kg but the Otter as you know is all day up the stairs and down the stairs and up the stairs and down the stairs. We're doing it again next year September, going to try and book both huts this time for our hiking group.

Yeah, one short day with 22kg was a bit rough. By the next day I was down to reasonable weight, but I had a hangover.

You have to train with a load on your back - I often do short day hikes with the bag packed to capacity, just to get the legs and hips used to the load.

I used to also train with 30kg (3 bags of 10kg pap in the bag), then you know you are ready for anything

Either the BF is carrying like a mule (like I do for my wife), or they are eating like peasants, salivating at the other peoples food..
