Could one of you propellerheads help me out. My home PC is giving me grief. Something is running in the background, and using up all my resources, constantly accessing the HDD. I've scanned for viruses, worms, adware, spyware etc... but nothing is found. I've had this intermittently since I updated Windows, but tonight it is really bad.
I thought it could be Mozilla Firefox (ver 0.9.2) as it is not final version, but I uninstalled it and the problem continued. I checked task manager to see what processes are using lots of resources, and the only one that looks strange is cidaemon.exe, which was using about 15Megs of memory. I think it is a Windows component, but what does it do? As a test, I killed the process and immediately my PC speeded up. However when I restarted MS Iexplorer, cidaemon started up again, and my PC slowed down again. I reinstalled Firefox, and killed cidaemon and Internet explorer and the PC seems fine again. Any ideas?
Extra info: WinXP Home sp1, Norton Internet Security.
