Thought some posters on the board might know.

I want to order a Garmin GPS from Amazon.

What will the import duty be?

As I understand things:
Final cost = Dollar cost * R/$ * 1.14 for VAT * ??? for import duty?

TIA

I dout they will ship that internationally anyway,

They wont ship a Garmin, they only have a USA distribution licience

We have at least 3 Official importers here in SA
Check www.garmin.com for a dealer list
Which GPS did you want ? Most are available here

But for interest it would be 14% VAT on 110% of the value of the goods(according to tax law) and about
12% - 20% import duty, And about R100 clearance fees

Oh, and if you bring in more than 3 things a year you need a importers code from SARS

Does that include stuff like Dvds?

DVD's dont have import duty any more but do have 14% VAT

USA price:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000058BCR/qid=1087730025/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/104-0268697-4782346?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846
~$270 = R1800

UK (& SA price):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008W5UJ/ref=sr_aps_electronics_1_1/202-5419429-2841416
~GBP300 = R3750

I aint paying double for not buying it in the States.

Already found a US retailer that will ship to ZA.

Just need to find out about the import duties [}:)]

Watch out

There are 3 MAP Versions ( USA, Atlantic, Pacific ) see: http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/

You need the Atlantic Map version to work here

Thats the reason for the price difference, they sell many more USA versions than anything else

Not shure under which customs number a GPS falls but the average for those types of electronics
is 15% customs duty and 14% VAT (on 110% of value of goods)

Thanks for the info. I already have the SA base map.

From http://www.garmin.com/include/basemaps/atlantic_hway_basemap.html

" Please note: Garmin mapping units come with built-in, permanent basemaps that cannot be altered. "

So You may have updates but not the Basemap !!!!!

You can download new maps from the CD. The basemap will just be useless to me but thats ok. I'm probably not even going to use the onboard map feature ...

If you are talkiing about the Mapsource CD, it wont work if your basemap in the unit is not for your area

Trust me, I have tried, I work with GPS units all the time

I hope you find it cheaper somewhere else, Keep me informed I also hate having to pay more than the USA,
but thats just how it is. Some of the Handheld Aviation units we have here are about R3500 more than in the USA,
nevermind the fixed units that run in the 10's of thousands

Shyze! [:(!]

I'll start googling ... someone ... somewhere... must have figured out how to do this!

Maybe the reason why we pay more is because of the bandwidth between... no wait

yea, good old "proudly south african" ripping us off again....

"what, they dont know any better, they'll pay anything!"

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Noone, we pay the same as the UK ( at the current exchange rate )

The USA versions are cheaper because they make / sell SO much more ( basic economics )

The hardware is identical.

The african GPS coords, for them, are a once off cost.

Were being screwed by Garmin. Deal.

People / companies shouldn't try to keep info from me. They fail each and every time.

All information should be free.

[}:)] <- Information anarchist

Its the cost of producing the Basemap software, and some hardware

The USA version only covers the US which is a much smaller region than the other two maps and information
from that region is more accesable. ( mapping data for the US is VERy Cheap )

The Basemap is on a ROM chip in the unit that would need to be soldered out and Flashed
A number of them have larger capacity chips in the International version due to the larger region covered.
Also their USA charger usually only works on 110V so you would need to buy a international charger if it
doent run on normal penlights

The mapsource CD also contains no Base region data, so you would need the software from Garmin, ut I doubt you would ever get it.

Been looking at this for years now

Well if I buy a US one and have access to a ZA one it should just be a question of transferring base maps.

Rodent should be able to help out there [8D]

Give me a few days to google around and I'll report back.

We may end up with a <s>hack</s> tweak Garmin site hosted here at RPM's pleasure [}:)]
