Flying Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to the United Kingdom cost taxpayers an estimated R4,55-million, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

This was "irregular and way out of proportion with reasonable standards", Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said in a statement.
a plane had to be flown from Switzerland to take Mlambo-Ngcuka and her entourage to the UK - because there were not enough trained pilots in South Africa.

On her return to South Africa, the plane would have to be flown back to Switzerland
OMG!

How the hell can one trip to the United Kingdom cost us R4,55-million

Well that is to be expected from the current government. Unfortunately their supporters will vote them back into power again and again and again and again and again and again ad infinitum.

True actually. A pilot has to have an aircraft type on his/her license in order to fly it. The aircraft (F900) was available, but the pilots were on standby for the president's plane (BBJ) and annual holiday.

The Anglo-American G5 was busy. As was the alternative one from Execujet.

She allegedly didn't like the aeroplane available (a G2) so alternative arrangements were made.

They had to fly in a Global Express from Europe (Switzerland?).

She also flew from Lanseria via Marsailles. Then to Scotland and finally to London. [6 pax 5 crew]

So what's wrong with a boeing 747? And *not liking* the G2 is not a reason to splurge. She (and thre rest of the presidency and cabinet for that matter) is a civil servant. There is NO need for her and her "entourage" to be shuffled about at a cost of millions for what is essentially a single trip. The tax payer is being exploited at every turn, yet the people who should be getting something back get nothing.

Working Holiday.

/Sarcasm
This is absolutely ridiculous that we must hire a jet from a foreign country.
Please buy the Deputy President her own jet already.
While we are at it why not one for each Minister as well.

Isn't this like deja vu? All around the XMas Holiday period again.
Parliamentarians having seemingly pressing engagements in lands far away.

One thing is for sure, The Deputy President will be absolved of all wrong doings.
Just like the last one in January this year. Mbeki defends Phumzile's trip

Note: We cannot get a measly half a million out of the Local/Provincial Authority to put pavements on our roads in one specific area near to where I stay for more years than I can remember, but at a flick of a pen or not they can fork out Millions to cart the Deputy President around to lands around the world as if they were on a sight seeing tour.
Very good motivation to pay your taxes.

So our pilots and planes aren't good enough for her? Does she class herself above everybody else? What's wrong with a "mere" business class seat? And she gets to take her buddies along for the ride with at the expense of the citizens? I'm surprised that nobody kicked up a fuss yet because this is becoming ridiculous now.
