*chuckle* I missed that, thanks bwana... It would make the impression that they're normal people, not celebrity superstars. Even celebrities flying around in private Jets pay for their own flights.

they are democratically elected representatives of the people, carrying the hopes of the nation on their shoulders - I would like to see Dubya boarding an American Airlines Flight

Nowhere did I say that it was right that such a huge amount of money was spent - but it is not the DP's decision - that decision is squarely in the hands of the DoD

Must really learn my abbreviations

Air Force One is actually just a 747. And president bush spends a lot more time in the Air than his South African counterpart should, given the size if the US....

you're the only paying passenger on the plane

Even if there were 500 paying people on the plain that would equate to R9100 per person. Cattle class is mostly cheaper than that, with less than 500 people. Still doesn't compute.

It was a chartered flight, we had to pay for the plane to fly in from Switzerland pick up the DP, fly out to the UK, wait for her there, it will then fly back to SA, drop her off and fly back to Switzerland - we pay for all that - that's where the 4.55 mil price tag comes in

Empty (of passengers) plane flown Switzerland -> ZA, then to wherever Mlambo-Nguka went and back, then returned to Switzerland, empty.

I think there is some confusion over the abbreviation DP(?).

It is up to the opposition to pose these questions during question time in parliament. So whether or not the media dig up these things is only relevant to the public, it is up to the opposition to pose the questions in parliament. Good to see you're still on track to bad mouth the DA.

Thanks Chiskop - by saying DP I meant Deputy President

@ Jonty - yes I'm sure the ever watchful DA will ask the question in Parliament - just goes to show how effective opposition they are - that they couldn't pick this up - It's good that ol Leontjie is packing his bags

And I'm sure you and your fellow ANC buds will be throwing a nice big party the day he leaves parliament as well.

Exactly! A bit of a waste don't you think.
Another question: Should the deputy president fly SAA, who would be able to recognize her? I know I wouldn't.

Well, he's said he will stay on as a MP after stepping down from the leadership, so we'll have to put the celebration on hold for a while still. ;)

Seriously, I would like nothing more* than a viable and representative opposition in SA - the DA under Tony Leon was not it. I hope that they take the opportunity that his departure presents to change into something that is relevant to more South Africans.

Of course it is a waste - and I haven't seen anyone defend that, either here or in the news.

The fact that you cannot recognise public figures is neither here nor there.

*This is hyperbole as there are, in fact, some things that I would like more than a viable and representative opposition in SA, but they are not on topic.
