I accept that she doesn't make her own travel arrangements, and even that she has offered to fly commercial airlines safe in the knowledge that that won't be allowed.

But this is not the first time that this has happened. This is at least the third time, and depending on how you choose to count, maybe the fifth or sixth time it has happened.

That is just not good enough from the Deputy President.

Lekota's enquiry, as I understand it, is aimed only at the military official who authorised the spending. That is not where the blame should be placed.

How would you know, the terms of reference for the board of enquiry has not yet been drawn up, and it seems that the enquiry will look at her travels from jan till dec

On Wednesday, Lekota's office announced the inquiry would now span the period between January 1 and December 10 this year.

leading me to believe they are looking at the whole process of transporting the Deputy President

No, but that was what he spoke about when he discussed it at the press conference on Sunday - he was at pains to point out then that the Deputy President was not responsible for her own travel arrangements etc....

Does Lekota have the superiority to investigate the DP?

Yes Lekota has already stepped up and taken the blame, now he wants to take action to prevent it from happening again

She allegedly didn't like the aeroplane available (a G2) so alternative arrangements were made.

So what is the flight range of a G2 with 8 people onboard ... if you find the answer then it will dawn on you why they could not use it :).

6880km with max fuel so it would probably be about 6000km (maximum) with 8 pax and crew which would mean a definite stop over somewhere in Africa.

Our CEO does not stop over in "somewhere" in Africa and neither do us humble employees like myself when attending to company matters in the US or EU ... why should our Deputy State President be expected to do this when attending to important state matters all tired ???.

The next thing is that she must now stay over in the local YMCA hostel to save us taxpayers money :).

DA and their cronies must get real for a change.

It might improve on her awareness of how people really live. Might even help with some character building ;)

So, in other words, you are quite happy for them to spend these amounts on travel?

She could most certainly fly commercially though.

Speaking of accommodation where did she stay? The SA Embassy?

Ta ta ma money!

they are democratically elected representatives of the people, carrying the hopes of the nation on their shoulders -

More like hidden in their pockets than on their shoulders ;)

Though when the pockets are bulging, it's not so hidden is it :D

I can't help but wonder if this wasn't a ploy by someone in the military who has a problem with a potential female president... since the ANC claims it had nothing to do with her and someone else approved it...

But seriously... she could have flown first class SAA quite a few times considering tickets cost R30 000.

Deputy President

Don’t they get discounts at SAA?

As xtermin8or said “Mlambo-Ngcuka does not make travel arrangements - the Department of Defense does - something has been going wrong there - and the blame can not be placed at the door of the Deputy President”.

But can't she ask for what she want’s?

I agree with Chiskop - this shoud have been done sooner, after the initial trip to Dubai - but Government got too caught up trying to explain that it was not the DP's doing but the process - that it seems they never got around to the process

what I meant was that after Mushwana said there should be tighter controls etc. the Dod should have looked into the matter then, not wait until it happened again then launch an inquiry

What I am saying is that after the Dubai trip - there should have been an investigation and controls should have been tightened - something is very wrong - albeit late they are doing something about it - Lekota has promised that the board of inquiry will not take long to complete the report - he has also said that he will take action

How would you know, the terms of reference for the board of enquiry has not yet been drawn up, and it seems that the enquiry will look at her travels from jan till dec

Well that just about sums our government up: woulda, shoulda, coulda, it's imminent. Hasn't happened yet. Looking at it. Drawing up plans. Um, 12 years later that is the concise history.

Has our government ever heard of the telephone? Checks and balances? Delivery (right place, right time, right price.) Um, no.

And once again, if no one was looking no one would notice. Least of all anyone who should care.
