So I've been relatively out of touch with computing in general...

I used to swallow datasheets, specifications, benchmarks....back in the Pentium4/Athlon64 days, I kept up till 1st gen i7s then I lost track....I have no idea if a 7870 is better than a 660 TI or if a 4770K is better than a FX 8350.
suggestions to get back into it? I started reading online forums but its just so much.
Pcformat & Nag have kinda died...not as much hardware anymore, not to mention inaccuracies

tl;dr
whats happening in :
Amd vs Intel in a) single threaded b) multithreaded c) general

Amd vs Nvidia in :
Model numbers, 7970, 290x, 270, gtx titan...I'm all confused

I think google and read some reviews. Coming from someone who lost track also I would not expect a lecture here. The topics are too diverse. It seems like you have all the topics, just look up what you want to know. Plenty review sites out there.

I would suggest checking out some of the System Builder marathon, GPU charts and CPU charts on www.tomshardware.com as they have pretty informative articles, and lots of charts etc to make decision making easier

Provide a budget and we'll fight for a few pages and eventually provide a recommendation.
