Good day mybb'ers

I have a 2 TB USB 3.0 HDD that i keep all my series and movies on, most of the movies are mkv format (1080p) and PS3 doesnt play that.

Im looking for a android media player with the following :

Must be able to add codecs to play any file formats.I know the basic ones will be covered but h.265 format is just around the corner...
Must have a LAN connection
Must be able to play files one after the other automatically.
Wifi hotspot funtionality is a bonus
Ability to download the VLC android player is a bonus

budget R<1000

It must have a nice fast interface!I've seen some slow media players out there.

Thnx!

I would get this

I have one at home and it is awesome. Its a little more than you want to spend, but I think its worth it. It has all of the connections that you require.

If you dont buy that, I can recommend AVSupply as a shop. Their service is excellent.

I dont know if it will support h.265. Also bear in mind, that this unit comes with XBMC preinstalled, but can only output XBMC video at 720p, although android runs at 1080p. So XBMC will just upscale - it looks fine.

There is not a single Android media player that runs XBMC in 720p, so its not a failing of this unit. You can also get a build of Linux for this unit that does run XBMC in 1080p, although then it is XBMC only - no possibility or running anything else.

being Android, it can run other applications of course (unless you put on that Linux build I mentioned).

Install the program called ps3 media server on your download pc or something that runs 24/7.

Then you can stream any format to your ps3 , does not even have to be jailbreaked!

From a quick look around, you can, but you might not have hardware acceleration, which would mean it would not decode any HD video. I think do some research before buying, if you really want to use VLC.

Or ask AVSupply - they are quite knowledgeable.

I have the MK808B Android mini PC

I love, that apart from all the media playing, I also have access to the Play store, all my Google services ( ever seen Google maps streetview on a humungoes TV ) and web browsers.

The unit comes rooted and have Flash installed
XBMC has always been a hit and miss affair for me, but with this, I have adblock installed and stream everything that requires flash via the browser - wiziwig, streamhunter etc.

Connected hard drive display folders in ES File Explorer and from there, open in MX Player with HW decoding on - flawless video playback on all codecs I chuck at it

My point is, for R450 landed, it is not a one trick pony and there are now faster and better models available

Thanks Ancalagon :D

Our suggestion to anyone holding out for a quad core box is to wait a lot longer. We recently took delivery of a number of quad core Rockchip boxes and the Amlogic Dual Core MX beats them hands down. The stock firmware on the Rockchip boxes needs a lot of work and the custom ROMS floating around on the internet removes Wireless and/or LAN. XBMC is also very bad and struggles to play HD content, even with the 4 cores!

The only reason i mentioned VLC is that i have VLC on my pc and it can handle anything you throw at it, so i thought that the VLC for android would be just like VLC for PC but you have pointed out that it doesnt have any hardware acceleration...:( I really really dont like any upscaling, and want to watch 1080p @ 1080p mkvs.

Impressive lil unit for that price, I checked for a LAN port but i dont see one there :( Darn, if only it had a lan port!

I want the lan port because i need to connect this box to my router, so that i can see all my new downloads on my pc without the need to copy files around to watch in the lounge.

Hi Batista,

A 1080p update is in the works. Our boxes ship with 1.1.6 and 1.1.7 is suppose to contain the 1080p release

As mentioned by Ancalagon, the Linux build supports a 1080p XBMC interface.

Would you like me to test VLC and confirm it does or doesn't support hardware decoding? The play store VLC change log suggests it works for some hardware

Hey AVman

Yeah that would be awesome because no one seems to know the truth.

On your site it says : "The DroidTV MX Box with XBMC (12.1) runs smooth 1080p "

Pls confirm for us? :)

It plays all resolutions smoothly but the XBMC interface is limited to 720p, for now :)

It does sound like false advertising so I'll change it temporarily until they release the 1080p update

I've got a few Geniatech(Mygica) players hooked up in my place and my folks'. Love them, even the 510B plays the HD content smoothly on the right versions of XBMC ( needs hardware acceleration )
