I read this with amusement yesterday....

http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/Articles/TarkArticle.aspx?ID=2274752

"GAUTENG radio stations are set for a battle royal as listenership figures have plummeted over the past two years — and station bosses will have to raise their standards considerably to woo back listeners.

The province’s biggest losers are youth station YFM, which has lost 1.8 million listeners, and Jacaranda which has lost a million listeners.

Also on the decline are Kaya FM, which has lost an audience of 500000, and 400000 listeners have stopped tuning into Highveld Stereo. Talk Radio 702, which recently gained an FM frequency, has also seen 300000 listeners tuning out....."

I know why I ditched Highveld.... Darren Simpson and endless repeats.

was just thinking today maybe I should switch the radio on - Nah, still off.

I gave up 5 about a year ago (used to listen all the time.)

... and now just lost my favourite saturday night show - no announcement, no nothing - gone. One more night/day not to switch on the radio.

Idiots.

Anybody notice how a radio station can go off the air (dang, wrong button in the studio, dj asleep) - and nobody notices.

scary.

Stopped listening to the radio the day I got my first iPod - this way there's always something worth listening to.

SAFM is moderately interesting and R2000 can be ok at times, but ya, basically SA radio sucks - none of them play Turbonegro.

The Internet and portable devices that connect to it will slaughter radio in the next decade or two.

You forgotten about telkom - or are you a multi-millionaire?

The internet would already be an option - if not for telkomdemonmonopolies :D

Hahah, part of the Kapstad Jugend? Its the turbonegro fan club.... You can even get T-shirts and stuff now, because they have an official Cape Town branch.. or some guys are just running it for themselves..

Well Monday nights on Afrikaans radio theres a metal/alternative/whatever program that would probably play Turbonegro if you asked.

I work in radio and the one thing i put it down to is music and lack of good DJ's.
Most of the music played is a load of crap, i dont think i need to go into this as you can just turn on your radio to under stand.
The DJ's seem never have anything interesting to say, never talk about interesting issues or the sorts.
Now not to blow my own trumpet, the show i do. Is to what listeners say very interesting. we only play music off our personal cd's as we find it connects more with listeners, we never force music down there throats. The topics are risky from what listeners say.

aaah the good old days of coal burning radio like LM Radio and Springbok Radio. I have been listening to Classic FM (I think its called 102.7) on my way home from work during traffic madness and found it quite soothing in a odd way. But then I am an old toppie... its expected.

Endless advertising, and unlike the TV it isn't feasible to mute it. Increasingly annoying DJs who never shut up. Bland music.

A place I worked at several years ago had Radio Good Hope piped into the place. I'd swear that station employed someone fulltime to go out and find the worst music ever in every genre. And they had that horrible station playing on the factory floor too. No wonder productivity was low. They should have called it Radio Ultimate Despair.

The DJs I usually enjoyed were the ones that played music they personally liked and about which they could often offer interesting information; not music some bean counter decided the audience would want to hear. Although not my favourite type of music I enjoy classical and what I have always liked about classical stations is that the presenter provides some interesting background to the music they're about to play, then they play it, without interrupting to spew annoying inanities. Jazz stations are usually similar.

On topic: What station are you at Kimosabe?

Off topic: http://www.turbojugend.net/pg/localdetail.php?a_id=8651 - Joburg's not that far behind, Vensters. Now if Lenin would just hurry up and authorise most of our members. The jackets are on order too. Funnily enough I knew a bunch of the ppl in TJ Kaapschtad when I lived there. Only realised they'd made a Jugend when I was looking to start one here in Joburg.

Ja, me too. And most of my friends.

It's Fine Music Radio FMR.

Used to listen to crap talk, but then it started living up to its name.

1. I think Jacaranda FM announcer should rather say 'Jakaranda FM' - the 'Jacaranda' sounds incredibly cheap & kommin.

2. Who is the Five FM audience nowadays? I switched off long ago, might still listen to Sasha & IanF in the afternoon.

3. Highveld plays OK music during the day, I'm normally 'tuned in' to them.
