Big problem with South Africa's new driver's licence card machine plans

The South African government has still not selected a company to provide a new driver's licence card printer machine, over two years after being notified that the current printer had become obsolete.

The country's sole driver's licence card printer is currently broken down after a technical issue following two weeks of "routine maintenance" between 5 April 2023 and 19 April 2023.

Yup. It should come as no surprise that whether it's power station maintenance or drivers-license card machines - their approach is to give zero flucks until things go wrong then scramble around for a band-aid.

Fixed the heaing for you:

Outa warns of possible definite corruption with new driving licence card system procurement"

Also heard they want to merge drivers license cards with ID cards. Isn't that what we had with our old ID books?

My R2000 cheapie WIFI printer at home can print in better quality than that machine.

Don't worry. We'll just 3D print a new part with a printer procured for R100m.
