Eskom's big problems

Eskom is in deep trouble. Its power stations are collapsing, it has run out of money to buy diesel for its open-cycle gas turbines, and there is no coherent plan to stop load-shedding.

Energy expert Chris Yelland said in addition to the usual random breakdowns at Eskom’s power stations, units one, two, and three at Kusile will be offline for five months.

"Payment arrangement details and information on where the money is coming from have yet to be disclosed."

Did they found it under a mattress?

The reality is that most of the problems, including explosions and fires that caused the prolonged outages, happened under De Ruyter’s watch.

Kusile Unit 1 800MW
Kusile Unit 2 800MW
Kusile Unit 3 800MW
Kusile Unit 5 800MW
Koeberg Unit 1 920MW

These are all age/legacy related issues. De Ruyter can't go back and magically fix the problems that arose from the design of Kusile. Koeberg unit 1's refurb is still on track with what was originally planned. Now unit 2 is another story...

Medupi Unit 1 800MW

Way back in the day I read an anonymous article on News24's public blog about how Eskom was being taken to the cleaners by criminal syndicates, some of which operated with connections to JZ. We barely had load shedding at the time, so I had my doubts. Now? Not so much. I would not be surprised if the destruction of this unit was intentional so the contractor would be involved in rebuilding it.

Sabotage would be intentional, so no.
So Mybb should remove this one
  • November 2021 — A distribution-line tower providing power to the coal conveyor system at the Lethabo power station collapsed because of sabotage.
Cause that wasn't human error :)
