A letter in Business Day: http://www.businessday.co.za/articles/article.aspx?ID=BD4A533450
The government, in the form of Alec Irwin’s trade and industry department, has stumbled across the blockage to our economic development, Broadband bid hits legal hitch (August 3) — “The Regulator”.
“The Regulator” decreed that Eskom should not raise the finance needed to build essential power stations. We ran out of power.
If the latest Eskom annual report is to be believed, and if the economic growth is moderate, we will just survive — but if growth averages something like 6%, we will soon be back in the pooh.
“The Regulator” decreed there were no grounds for a new pipeline bringing fuel from the coast to Gauteng. Seen any signs of a fuel shortage yet?
“The Regulator” decreed there should be at most one competitor to Telkom, and, behold, there isn’t even one. Instead we have the costliest and most inefficient communications of any reasonably developed country.
Now the government is getting itself (and our economy) deeper in the muck with a regulator for the mining industry. The minerals and energy department say there is no problem, arguing that there are a few more minor miners entering the JSE. They may not have noticed that there has been a minerals boom, and that most of the industry majors are offshore.
More regulators we don’t need. It’s time for a real plumber to clear the blockage and set the economy free.
