I was hoping for a group of us to hike through Royal Natal to the base of the Amphitheatre & Tugela Falls, camp overnight and then come back the next day but have been told this is not allowed.
So I'm looking for an alternative besides hiking to the summit of the Amphitheatre. So does anyone know if any other parts of the berg allow overnight camping? Not actual campsites that you can drive to though

You could hike from the car park in the Royal Natal National Park to the base of the Tugla and back in one day but it would be a serious walk especially the last part once you're past the chain ladder and "crevice".
The first 8km is easy going but the last few is serious boulder hoping and there is no established trail. I got to within about 1 or 2 km of the base but had to turn back because my fiancee wasn't up to it. Started at about 7AM and got back at 4PM with a 30 minute break but she's not a hiker. I'd estimate about 8 hours to the falls and back if you keep a decent pace.

Absolutely breathtaking scenery though and we did it in August when it's still dry and dusty. Will be hot, wet and green at this time of the year.

Another option is hiking along the top of the Amphitheatre. I can't remember the details but their are huts somewhere along the top if I remember correctly.
You could also look at Sentinel Hill - they have a hut at the top for groups of hikers who want to sleep over.

Thanks web

Paul, i think i might end up doing that. There are around 6 of us wanting to go so not sure if all will make it there & back in a day so was hoping for a slow walk and camping overnight.
Might end up staying nearby the night before & leaving as soon as the gates open

We were also there in August last year but my g/f had a huge blister from the previous days attempt to the Amphitheatre summit so we only walked around an hour towards to gorge before turning back
