Overwhelmed Road Accident Fund set to retrench about 400 staff members

Pretoria - While the Road Accident Fund (RAF) is facing litigation over concerns about its functioning and efficiency, about 400 of its staff members are facing a bleak Christmas.

The RAF has announced that it intends to retrench them by the end of November.

Earlier this month, the RAF issued staff members with Section 189 notices which stated that it would embark on a consultative process as a starting point to the envisaged retrenchments.

In the letter addressed to employees, the RAF said the organisational structure review and implementation of an integrated claims management system were key objectives of the fund’s 2020-2025 strategic plan to ensure a transformed and sustainable RAF.

“The previous operating model has proved to be unsustainable and did not enable the organisation to carry out its legislative mandate effectively,” it said.

Typical anc run operation where they hire and hire and hire in order to baffle the unemployment rates and vote creation as well as to create cadre employment for friends and family etc.

This has on so many occasions turned around and bitten them but they will continue at the taxpayers expense.

I heard recently that this ANC looted sham has liabilities of R300bn. That is a big hole; Eskom sized in fact.

I suspect appointing lawyers to unwinnable cases and who charge over the top fees and give kickbacks.

There was one case for a foreign (Swiss) guy who got a massive payout after a motorcycle accident that cost R1bn or so.

Otherwise should be compulsory vehicle owner insurance to cover what RAF does and close it; quickly. Too lucrative for the ANC so won't happen.

Best course of action for those affected ex-employees is to jump in front of a (public regional/city) bus and put in claims for injuries.
Their is no money to pay out due to rampant theft and corruption by the employees.

How's the ANC benefiting from the RAF? That fund is mostly being defrauded by lawyers, doctors with collusion of citizens in some cases but mostly just lawyers.

Indeed...this RAF has become a feeding trough.

I personally know an Industrial Psychologist that makes R2bar PER MONTH out of the RAF. And this just in fees...they also pay ALL his traveling and accommodation expenses.

The ANC may be managing it badly, but I do not see them making money out of it?

It's not like it is a State or SOE pension fund now is it...

There will be a slight delay in payments, sure ... but the future is looking bright, surely? /s

I should re-phrase; not the "ANC" but its members, friends and family who got into the "management". Same as Lottery, SAA, many municipalities etc etc.

No doubt a lot of the problems have been created by corrupt officials but just as much has been fleeced from the RAF by everyday people putting in claims by exaggerating minor injuries , i know of people claiming hundreds of thousands or even millions after being involved in accidents , there are thousands of lawyers working tirelessly to win claims on a daily basis , all abusing the system.

Exactly. Having had Western education myself, I will hardly ever think about such things.
I think it happens "everywhere"; just all pervasive in SA under the ANC regime.

As to "fleecing" the system; yup, someone I knew who said it was a slam dunk. RAF defended the indefensible, employing lawyer pals, ramping up the costs of what should have been a simple, straightforward, modest settlement but took many hours, some in court to reach the original conclusion. Add those fees and the whole thing ballooned. He bought his own aeroplane.

I agree, but if we cannot close it, why do lawyers need to be in involved? As it is simply an insurance company organisation, and should be operated on the same principles;

Fixed amounts for specific type of injuries. That would limit the liabilities, and lawyers dont have to get involve and rip of the injured persons.

My neighour lost his leg (under the knee) in bike accident. He made a few mill out of RAF. He doesn't even have to work. I estimate he is mid 20.
