Hundreds of soccer lovers who were hoping to fly to Durban for the semifinal between Spain and Germany are still stuck at airports around the country and could not make it in time for them to watch the match.

What was supposed to be the end to a brilliant world cup streak for the city turned into a nightmare when King Shaka International airport could not accommodate anymore aircraft as its parking area was full.

Frustrated fans vented their frustrations on twitter during the match. This is what some of them had to say.

I am f*****g convinced we got shack-dwellers running the bloody Durban airport! I wonder how many paying fans will not get to see the game??

Airport overwhelmed by VIP plane rush

http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6&click_id=2871&art_id=nw20100707202424862C652288

A moth-balled South African airport re-opened on Wednesday to serve as a parking lot for the private planes of notables attending the World Cup semifinals between Germany and Spain while other planes were turned away.

"We have had an overflow of flights," said Colin Naidoo, a spokesman for the new Durban King Shaka International Airport.

Private planes have landed at the new airport and flown off to park for the match at the old airport about 60km away that served as the air link for the eastern coastal city until earlier this year, he said.

Among the notables expected to attend the game were Spain's King Juan Carlos, South African President Jacob Zuma, US actor Leonardo DiCaprio and US socialite Paris Hilton, local media reported. - Reuters
Somebody seriously screwed up their estimates and forward planning!

And Durban wants the Olympics.

The SWC was going brilliantly ... and now this. Feel sorry for those people.

School fees. It seems odd that an airport is able to overschedule flights.

What were they hoping the planes would land in such close succession that even aerobatic pilots would be impressed?

Voetbalfans lopen halve finale mis

http://nos.nl/wk2010/artikel/170411-voetbalfans-lopen-halve-finale-mis.html

or Parys Hilton! they shoulda re-routed her flight to dumbville///
LOL! ...

I dunno why they didn't just tell the other flights to also land at the old airport. Surely they could have organised some airport buses or something to get the people from the other airport???

That's Doctor Kissinger to you lot. He won a Nobel Peace prize back when they gave them out after you had accomplished peace begetting achievements.

Noble peace prize means nothing to me anymore since Obama won it. :(
