Hi all,

I want to buy a paintball gun. Not for the sport where you and your buddies go to the veld and shoot the crapola out of each other, but just for protection at home.

What would be the best gun to buy, why, and what would be the ones to stay away from, and why.

Obviously I want one that can rain balls for a long time.

Any other things to be aware off.

Just saying.

Get a Tippman A5 with folding stock, gas mask and pepper balls. I don't advise adjusting the string and using ceramic balls. Could get you into trouble if you kill someone.

I have a Tippmann paintball gun, it has been modified for self defense, so it can no longer fire the standard paintballs, just the glass nylon balls. Picked it up from The Paintball Shop in centurion.

It managed to dent the strengthening rib of a oil drum when i tested it.

OK, let us know as soon as you get attacked by an oil drum!

You don't take a toy to a gun fight.

I use my paintball markers for paintball and use the real stuff to defend and protect my family.

Yes. Criminals typically shoot back with real bullets. Bullets that will kill you.

Don't bring a paintball gun to a gunfight, you are likely to come second.

This

A paintball marker is not going stop a determined criminal never mind 4-5 of them and they are armed with guns.

Never mind the fact that a paintball marker is a schlep to lug around the house or take with when you go out.

A Glock 19 is very concealable and holds plenty beans to defend yourself against multiple opponents.

I've always wanted one fitted to the car so I can pot lousy drivers. Balls should be filled with a luminous green or orange dye. Or brake fluid.

Anyone in CT that is considering getting a marker for self defense is welcome to pm to arrange a meet where you can compare the size/weight/conceal ability and practicality between a full size Tippmann Phenom (full auto marker) / Tippmann TPX (8 shot pistol) and a Glock 23 (same size as Glock 19)
I also have a blue training Glock 19 (a dummy / plastic gun) that is same weight/size as the real thing you can borrow for a few days to see how easy it is to conceal / carry a firearm.

I asked a similar question on here a few weeks ago.

The best advice was (keeping in mind I live on a small holding):
The best thing to do is sharpen up security around your house. eg.

Burglar bars
Good lighting around your house
ADT security
Get involved with your locals(we have a 911 Telegram group)
Get rid of stuff outside that they would like to steal and sell
A dog that sleeps in the house is the best alarm ever.

All great advice but if it's a lone ranger you want to scare away, I have been looking at the tippman a5 with response trigger.

Here's the thing, I did a lot of research and I am still not totally sure about if it's viable, I know it will be effective against average joe but anyway, part of what I looked up was Armed house robberies vs burglary, this is just a rough idea and is really open to scrutiny.

2013/2014
There were 19,284 armed robberies from homes, meaning people were attacked in their homes by armed people.
There were 260,460 incidents of people just being robbed, be it while they were at home or not, it means they we're not confronted.

So basically you have a 1 in 13 chance that your assailant/s will be armed, so if you plan on defending only with a paintball gun, you need to be totally sure they're not armed, in which case I am sure 15 nylon balls per second with some pepper will turn anyone away.

I would feel safer with a real gun but getting one is not an option for me at the moment.

You've extracted some sort of causal relationship from your stats that the perpetrators (criminals) in the non-confrontational crimes were not armed.
I think you're horribly mistaken.

I have some questions for you:
These guys don't usually operate alone. What do you do when there are 2 assailants? Or 3? Even a nylon ball does not incapacitate - the other assailants keep coming as soon as you're not firing on them (assuming they don't keep coming while you're firing at them).

What do you do if you shoot the assailant with a pepper ball and he drops? What's the next step? Wait for him to get up? Call the police? How do you stop him from resuming his attack?

Hence the "this is just a rough idea and is really open to scrutiny."
It's a rough conclusion I drew from the available information.

Anyway, you can pose your exact same question if you're sitting there with a baseball bat.

If I'm locked in my room with my family, doors locked and panic button pressed and they're still trying to get into the room chances are they're planning on doing harm. I would rather have a paintball gun loaded with nylon rounds than a stick.

Granted putting a few rounds through the door would be a better option but I am unable to get a gun.

Do you walk around with this gun?

There are many holes in your defence plan.

I can also tell you burglars have sharp tools, like screwdrivers, which will be no joke and potentially lethal if they get close enough.

.. oh and you can't shoot blindly through closed doors (see Oscar verdict).
