Don't know if it's worth much, but I'm on my 3rd Lumix... they've served me incredibly well. With each purchase I've tried to read up as far & wide as I could; Panasonic won out every time.

They are scarce, though. Most camera retailers don't distribute Panasonic for whatever reason...

Govan Mani, Hirsch & Hi-Fi Corp in KZN does Panasonic off the top of my head.

The Panasonics have a very good rep and it's probably what I would buy if I had to pick between the two. My one friend has one and it's a lovely little camera.

Yeah, from what I've read they are very good cameras.

Which one are you currently using?

Are Sony still using their own (stupid) memory sticks? I had the Panasonic TZ7 and it was awesome. Given the choice you have I would go Lumix every time.

my last superzoom compact before going DSLR, hopefully.

You don't have to go the SLR route, another option would be the Panasonic/Olympus micro 4/3 rds system or the Sony NEX ones. Look ma, no mirror.

True. Though price-wise Panasonic cost almost double.

+1 much higher quality than a bridge camera, interchangeable lenses ... in fact they rival DSLRs, and are still very compact.

Haven't yet. Will look into it. Thanks.

How does this compare to the compact zooms?

Tip from the Hardware bargains thread:

you can through take2 but it's a rip off.
http://more.take2.co.za/request.php
Just copy paste the url of the amazon product you want in there and it will give you a price.
But no you cannot ship directly from amazon that would have been nice:D

With this link from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC...0FFM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1299580430&sr=8-3
I'm getting R2905 on Take 2 which is not too bad considering the risk of international purchasing being taken out of the equation.

Finally order a Panasonic ZS8 from Takealot for ~R2400 sourcing from Amazon.com.

My pre-Christmas gift to myself :D.

Edit:
The original one I was looking was zs7/tz10 and not tz7 that's in the heading .
