Don't be daft...

We had this exact article and even debated it. Not linked to the Sunday times report. But parents pulling their kids from private school. There was even a Curro debate in that thread...
I've googled selected phrases from the article and didn't get any hits.

There was indeed a story some time ago about Curro also losing a lot of students. If I remember correctly, they were looking at some new kind of financing. Instead of paying monthly fees, they were considering a long-term loan for the whole school term, which would mean lowered monthly contributions. I cannot recall precisely what they had planned.

My son goes to a special needs school, currently over a third of children are on some form of fee exemption , expecting to get worse. And the government doesn't subsidize those exemptions, the school must find a way.

Education is a serious mess at the moment with regards to funding and cost.

Surely there must be a quota of how many can be exempted from paying to keep the school functioning. A third sounds rather too high. It'd think a reasonable figure would be 10%, maybe 15% at worst.

Surprise, the price of things go up each year.
Well that much is obvious...

The crux of the thread is the same. I recall either libs or LazyLion who part took in the thread saying that homes schooling seem the best option and they are currently doing it. The discussion then evolved into discussing the pros/cons of home schooling. Either way, been googling it now for a while I can't find it

One of my neighbours is a family with 4 children.

They're not poverty-stricken in the least but have chosen to homeschool rather than either pay the exhorbitant private school fees or use the state schools.

It seems to be working out for them, so far.

You've just time travelled and are remembering something from the rest of our future.

Eish...

There was a good conclusion drawn at the end iirc. It's cheaper to have a wife stay at home and school kids than both working and paying school fee for private education.

Geez ... who would have thought that with everything being more expensive + stealth taxes being bolted on everywhere; people are still abe

Special needs kids ... don't exactly have many places to go.

Nope, no quota. Mandated by the government to consider any and all requests for remission as it is a public special needs school. There are many genuine cases where folks can't afford it ( although the fees are actually very very reasonable ) and there are also odd people who take the ring out of it where they can pay but choose not to ( belief in free education, drive a fancy car but don't pay fees ).

The school also only has around 320+ learners and has to support additional educators, therapists and support staff, smaller class sizes due to the nature of children attending. The school does a wonderful job but has to raise more than half their funds via donations or fundraising. Lotto used to give funds but not this year sadly and with the economy many donors are struggling themselves.

About 20k pm gross, fresh out of uni.
**** me. I think I better find a job in the city. Hell I can even go for slightly less if SO can earn that. Although my 2 horse town does have its perks. Rush hour traffic means 5 minutes, not hours. Maybe I luck out haha

So what's the fees?

It's pointless linking anything to the Sunday Times, because pretty much everything is "This article is reserved for Sunday Times subscribers"...

They did paraphrase the increases, basically around 8% which is nearly double inflation. That's the point of the article, that it's unsustainable.
