Parents prevented classes from starting, demanding the school stops forcing learners to do maths and science.

Parents of learners at Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School in eMbalenhle, Mpumalanga prevented classes from starting this morning in protest of compulsory maths and science subjects.

They demand that the school stops forcing learners to do maths and science subjects because they say it results in their children dropping out of school.

Learners were told to return to their homes.

Parents say classes will resume after the Mpumalanga Department of Education MEC, Bonakele Majuba has attended to their grievances.

What do they propose they do instead? Or should they simply only do 4 of the subjects to pass?

No issue, provided it is supplanted by 3 other compulsory subjects, such as artisanship.
I suppose with an ever increasing amount of unemployed...There wont be much point going to school in a few more years anyway....

Exactly, hence the artisanship suggestion. Not everyone can make money "working from home" on spreadsheets; society needs people who can make things with their hands.

They can pick from one of the other many non math subjects. To be fair, the parents must just send their kids to schools who don't have those subjects as compulsory.

Yes, exactly! The Cloud cannot exist without hands that build the infrastructure that enables it.

The alternative is more freeloading and grants, which will be funded by taxpayers.

I guess none of the parents can put 1 +1 together to figure out that math and science are pretty critical life skills and a requirement for most further education.

Parents have time to protest but not time to help their kids academically.

What age are we talking about here? But as many have said, send your child to a trade or atisanal school that does n courses. Fitting and turning, electrical, welding etc. Durban still has George Cambell, dunno about others.
