Sheesh my dad was a bricklayer and let me tell you , you felt those bricksI'm trying to picture myself informing my father as a teenager:
Me: Dad, uhm... I need you to go to the school and tell the principal to remove math's and physics from the syllabus as I will be failing...
Dad:
Up until grade 9 it's basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry. No calculus or trigonometry. That should be enough without even needing the waste that is maths lit...
I'm pretty sure that it was the ANC that effectively stopped artisan training, in schools and post-school. Even the trade test centre in Olifantsfontein was mothballed.
At the time, they said that artisan training is for dumb people, pushed onto the blacks by the previous racist regime. That stupidity has caused havoc with people of all races who are not academically inclined, but who really want to work hands-on.

I don't see The Looter path.I suppose with an ever increasing amount of unemployed...There wont be much point going to school in a few more years anyway....

That's stupid.Parents prevented classes from starting, demanding the school stops forcing learners to do maths and science.
Parents of learners at Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School in eMbalenhle, Mpumalanga prevented classes from starting this morning in protest of compulsory maths and science subjects.
They demand that the school stops forcing learners to do maths and science subjects because they say it results in their children dropping out of school.
Learners were told to return to their homes.
Parents say classes will resume after the Mpumalanga Department of Education MEC, Bonakele Majuba has attended to their grievances.

Just give them a Matric certificate after Gr1. Saves 12 year at least. What do they propose they do instead? Or should they simply only do 4 of the subjects to pass?
You're right about the science.Wait they do realize if their kids make it to grade 10 they don't have to do math or science?
My father was a hard man. Went trough hell multiple times. What does not kill you makes you stronger. It eventually killed him....Sheesh my dad was a bricklayer and let me tell you , you felt those bricks![]()

Math Lit, I think is suitable for those who aren't going into STEM stuff. However, South Africa has the option of math literacy for those who don't want to go into a white collar job.
Not really. Those who fail Math and switch over to Lit, actually do a lot better (i.e. pass or achieve even higher), but you do get a handful that somehow manage to actually fail Maths Lit...And very likely the children failing math, are actually failing math lit.
Can agree here. If you do fail Maths Lit, something is wrong somewhere...Now call me cynical, but if you cannot even pass math lit, you are either mentally retarded (which isn't the case here), chronically lazy (still don't think that is the case), or there are chronic issues at the school and homes of these children.
It's about logic and problem solving skills..Not everyone is cut out for Maths and Physics and there are some jobs that don't really require it.
I'd actually support giving learners the option to not do it from Grade 8 onwards but they must obviously also accept the fact that by dropping it, they will be significantly reducing their job options for after School.
Again, not everyone is cut out for Maths and while Maths lit may be viewed as a waste, it is helped a lot of people get into fields like law school which they would have not gone into had they done pure maths.
It is important for young learners to establish a solid foundation in math and science. In addition to the inherent pleasure students can find exploring these subjects and the self-confidence built by mastery, this essential academic preparation opens doors to financial literacy, critical thinking and healthy decision-making. Moreover, these skills correlate to the health of the nation’s economy, as it relies on a workforce proficient in math and science. With the long-standing reality that U.S. students lag far behind other countries in math and science, it is essential that schools address this disparity in early learning.
Math and science education provides a framework for how to find answers. Math models phenomena and relationships in our observable environment, while articulating concepts from the intuitive to the obscure. Science gives deep attention to the quality and interaction of the things that surround us. Understanding those relationships has applications in the arts, policy and civic life. Preparing students to understand math and science gives them tools to understand, analyze and impact the communities where they live.
Agreed. We need more payrolled voters. Not everyone is cut out for Maths and Physics and there are some jobs that don't really require it.
