Parliament names independent panel to weigh Ramaphosa impeachment

South Africa’s former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo will head an independent panel that will recommend whether or not to initiate a process to impeach President Cyril Ramaphosa after allegations that he concealed a burglary at his farm.

Ngcobo, Thokozile Masipa, a former judge of the Gauteng Division of the High Court and Richard Calland, associate professor of public law at the University of Cape Town, were appointed to the panel on Wednesday by Parliament Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, parliament said in a statement.

Is this actually necessary to reveal? Sure we understand the contents that was stolen and the queries about the source of funds, but is there a law regarding the actual crime itself being required to be reported?

It really does mean much, an MP can just wake up in a bad mood and decide they want a no confidence vote, most of them are just frivolous political point scoring. I don't remember any impeachment being suggested against Mbeki, an impeachment became fashionable during the Zuma years.

Perhaps what I should have said was the formal proceedings in Parliament.

Being forced to resign isn't the same as impeachment, at least last time I checked.
