Part of a Covid-19 vaccine manufacturing plant in South Africa launched by US biotech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong and President Cyril Ramaphosa is available to rent after a plunge in demand for the shots.

The facility in Cape Town, announced in January after the continent had struggled to secure vaccines, is meant to produce a billion doses a year by 2025.

One of the two buildings in the A-grade facility with modern offices and a warehouse is available for lease as the owners of the campus wait for “their production requirements to scale up,” according to Shane Howe, Broll Property Group’s regional head of industrial broking. The plans are still in the design phase and nothing is being produced yet, he said.

If only those pesky things like individual rights didn't exist. Then poor billionaires like this guy could force everyone to take his stupid vaccine.

There was almost no market for the vaccine in South Africa. I would bet most people only got it because they were scared of being fired from their jobs. That is not a solid foundation to build a business on.

Except he wouldn't. I'm certain he knew demand would wane at some point.

I'm of the same mind.
Perhaps there was some form of quiet subsidy arrangement - what was lost on the swings is gained on the roundabout

Also,
The plant could employ 400 to 600 people and is dependent on the vaccine Soon-Shiong’s companies are developing being approved. The buildings were built 10 years ago for a tobacco company, and the rental asking price is R75 net per square meter, according to Broll’s statement.
What sort of vaccine was he developing? Article is very thin on detail.

The PIE Act goes a long way towards destroying the rights of property owners.

Unlike current vaccines that are based on stimulating the body to produce antibodies, Soon-Shiong’s approach is based on stimulating the body’s T-cell responses – something he has done successfully in cancer immunotherapy treatment.

His US company, NantKwest, has been developing “natural killer” (NK) cells used by the immune system to identify and destroy cells under stress, including cancerous or virally-infected cells.

Side note, his wife is also South African born, she played the role of MacGyver's foster daughter back in '89.
