Has anyone successfully hosted a web server with the ADSL Router POTS when used as a modem plus router via the PAT Parameter?

Peter,

It should be quite simple to set up. Simply set up a web server on the machine you need to host it, and redirect port 80 to that machine.

I have seen some reports of people having trouble with the PAT on the Marconi routers provided by Telkom. If it does not work, you could try upgrading your firmware, but be warned, Marconi firmware has been reported to do funny things when upgraded. One person even reported the new firmware completely disabling the modem's router capabilities and turning it into an ethernet bridge only. That hasn't been confirmed by a second party, but it sounds pretty disconcerting to me.

Even if you do get it working though, I sincerely would not recommend it. Due to IP addresses being assigned to ADSL users via DHCP, your IP would have to change at least once every ten days, or once every 24 hours due to the Marconi modem's non compliance with the DHCP standard forcing it to change IPs when the connection is reset.

You could use dynamic DNS services to point a virtual host name at your IP address, and update it as it changes, but if you want to host a full production web site, this is definitely not the way to go.

Instead, I would recommend you contact Hetzner Africa, they provide hosting for small web sites at extremely competitive pricing, for a basic site, you might pay as little as R40 per month.

If you have something larger in mind, please contact me, I can provide several web hosting solutions, with bandwidth and hosting space resold on Hetzner's network, also at very competitive rates. Feel free to drop me an e-mail.
