Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe, one of South Africa’s richest businesspeople, could soon acquire half of a controlling share in the Blue Bulls rugby franchise.

Billionaire Johann Rupert’s Remgro presently owns 50% of the Blue Bulls Company, but City Press’ sister publication, Rapport, has learnt that the mining magnate’s African Rainbow Capital has put in a joint offer alongside Remgro to purchase a controlling stake in the business.

This monetary injection could give the Bulls the chance to compete with some of Europe’s biggest rugby clubs on an equal footing, and enable them to keep their best players in South Africa.

Blue Bulls and Mamelodi Sundown, that's a monopoly on Pretoria sports.

What happened with Gumede and the Lions?

It's not a monopoly when anybody can bid for them. Hopefully, he uses them as farm labourers in his new initiative...

With his financial muscle and business acumen, he could actually Make Blue Bulls Great Again. Look at what he has done at Mamelodi Sundowns FC, now the team is a force to be reckoned with nationally, continentally and globally - He does not get personally involved with day-to-day running of the club like most 'bosses'...

Absolutely, he is a hands off owner at Sundowns. He is titled as club president but many signs checks and picks up trophies.

The head coach runs the on field issues, the GM other football issues and a board runs the rest. I suspect that he will do something similar at the Blue Bulls.

Patrice Motsepe now owns 37% of the Blue Bulls

CAPE TOWN - The Blue Bulls Company have on Friday announced Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe as their new shareholder.

Bulls confirmed that the deal was unanimously concluded on Thursday at a meeting held at Loftus Versfeld.

The new structure will mean that existing shareholders Remgro and the Blue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU) reduce their previously equal percentage of shareholding from 50% each to 37% and 26% respectively, allowing Motsepe to buy in the remaining 37%.

Lol. First the dstv debackle, now this. Steve Hofmeyer will be pissed...

Steve would be daft to be pissed about this...

Patrice is an astute businessman and his input can only help the Blue Bulls be better as a commercial entity.

That's what a rational man would say. Steve doesn't strike me as a rational fella.
