Your leaf pic is very nice. There is something about the DOF that makes me look it at it over and over - somewhere in the midfield it gets together and just works.

I know this it OT, but is there something about that dealership in particular I should be aware of? As you know I only deal with dealerships and the W220 S-Class is a childhood dream.

I do value your input on this - you have spent a great deal of your own money on cars and if you know something about that dealer please do share. Should seriously entertain the thought of trading in my 2010 52,000km Corsa D on that S-Class?

Thanks man, it wasn't a huge pile of leaves, and the 'sea of leaves' look is what I aimed for.

Without sounding like a douche, that dealership deals in cars from a demographic I generally wouldn't want to buy from. In other words, people who are more likely to look after their cars and be less windgat, would not be trading in their cars at that dealership.

I often believe in YOLO, and taking the opportunity to scratch the itch if there is no major financial loss, and you can get most of your money out. Being able to say "I had that" is satisfying and I've also fulfilled dreams of cars.

Before this latest one, I was a madman having at least 5 Gumtree tabs permanently open, refreshing numerous times a day, looking for 'the one'. Since I found it, I haven't been back to Gumtree in two months. :D

Given the fact that you hardly drive much, you won't be putting many kms on the car. Therefore the value will be maintained, and the bonus is that maintenance costs won't be astronomical.

Thanks PP. Your post really does mean a lot to me. I though when I saw full service history it meant this was a good deal. BTW I see now my original post did not have the correct link in it (I was snooping some Opel). The real car I want to trade my Corsa D in on is this : http://www.autotrader.co.za/used-ca...a-per-t--fpa-d4c890adfb944f15a7c43988fc0cd0ae

However I totally get what you are saying about the origins and service rituals of of said W220 so that does cast a shadow of doubt over it.

You have no idea how much that post meant to me. Thanks.
I'll keep you guys in the loop with regards to that W220 S-Class.

Looks in great nick. Nothing wrong with taking a look. Would not want to stand in the way of your dreams. ;)

I will only buy private, because when buying from a dealership, there's no way to suss out the previous/original owner. There are just far too many cases of dealers just being out to make a buck, especially off ignorant people, to inspire any confidence.

My friend bought a +-2013 Porsche Cayenne S from a dealership (I was appalled by the interior quality of such an expensive car). The car feels crap, missed a service, there are interior pieces breaking off, and the dealership will have nothing of it.

All that 'dealer confidence' out the window...

Seeing as this is a public forum I really do value that feedback, many moons ago when I was still considering the jump from G to H I was equally concerend about whether I was doing the right thing or not. Yet that was a GM dealer buying a much newer car - so I guess it is way different to what we are dealing with here.

I respect your buying/selling private only policy and also I am quiet glad it has worked out that well for you in the past. Rest assured that my last purchase, the Astra H, I had them drive it all the way from Worcester to Stellenbosch so my mechanic can check it out. A close family relative of mine did the same with a Jetta Mk4 from Worcester and the mechanic found major accident damage. So much so they took the car off the market perused legal matters against the person who traded it in.

Long of the short, I'll hold on to my Corsa D until I am sure this a worthwhile deal for me. I do not pin a lot (or anything) on dealer confidence. I'm just glad you can put a little substance to that because while me and you might be old enough to suss-out thing there are many that will be reading this going purely on impulse.

Definitely good to wait it out. I would still encourage a private sale. People who have maintained such classy vehicles want to get the most out of their car. They know that trade ins will screw them, so they are much keener to sell privately for more. I would bookmark a few Gumtree searches where you set the criteria to 'larnie' suburbs. Much higher chance of finding decent cars in these types of places. You can then meet and get to know the owner and suss them out. You can still get your mechanic or family member to check the car out for you, while you save at least 10% than if you were buying from a dealer where nothing of value is really added.

Thanks again. I suppose I do have the luxury of not needing to buy a car right now so I can afford to wait it out and see what comes way. When you suggest using searches with the location set to proper upmarket or "larnie" suburbs I take it that is from first hand experience? Nice going there  I;m still in moron mode so dealers is all I do. FML

What I have done so far is to check with Faiz how much they can give me for the Corsa. While I do have a bit of cash at my disposal I prefer to leave it in my bond. Then again there is the YOLO factor, and I might add I am surprised you subscribe to that point of view as I have always perceived you to be rather prudent.

Anyway, let see how this goes. If it is not a lot of dough off my skin I'll trade in the Corsa on a W220 S-Class in a heart beat. They can sell the Corsa D easily because they can still do a finance deal on it so maybe there is hope.

It's all about balancing YOLO and being prudent. :D

Keep us posted, and keep checking those larnie suburbs.

About the S-Class, dealer was keen to take the Corsa but said this about the Merc "No Spare Key an needs 4 Tyres. Mechanically very good. Interior & Exterior Excellent". That raised some questions on my side and I'm not keen on paying for a new one from Germany.

Skipping forward to today.

Sun rise feels kind of eerie here.

Bit suspect, but it could be harmless. Dealer should supply a spare one. ;)

What size wheels?

Thanks. I'm guessing it ended up with them because some dealers don't like missing spare keys. Maybe I should get a quote on the keys. Stock tyres on that car was 245/45R18.

I was surprised at the sheer volume of burnt landscapes today. Some parts felt like it was the moon. Good to see some bit of green new life showing in places.

We would have a field day discussing what could be dodgy about the car, dealership, etc.

Hope you've got your Gumtree tabs for private deals open/bookmarked, and that you are refreshing... You will find much better vehicles/deals private.

Controlled burns?

Gumtree is starting to sound like the least dodgy option for this kind of car.

Sadly these were out of control fires, not controlled. Still felt quite surreal being out there.

My efforts have paid off! ;)

Know what you mean, after the recent Muizenberg/Constantiaberg fires this side of town, it was also a lunar landscape up there. Flourishing now!

My wife took this in Hermanus just now with her iPhone 6s. Not mine but too stunning not to share :)
