Sunbird still has the build the gas rigs at the Ibhubesi offshore field and the gas pipeline to Ankerlig. And Eskom has to convert Ankerlig to use LNG instead of diesel.
I think Q4 2016 was the expected date. But the agreement is still being finalised

Why was Ankerlig not designed to run on gas in the first place instead of diesel? I have actually never heard of a power plant run on diesel before Eskom started complaining about the diesel bill. Either gas, oil, coal or nuclear. Never diesel.

What annoys me is that when Ankerlig and Gourikwa were completed (back in 2007), I recall they said that they were going to run them on diesel initially, but that they would source natural gas as that would be a lot cheaper. Fast forward to 2015 and they still hadn't done anything about it so then they wake up and try to find a solution to the expensive diesel.
Surely it would be quicker to import the diesel and put a pipeline in place from the docks rather than building gas rigs?

We didn't have gas back then, and gas prices were a lot more expensive than they are now.
OCGT can run on petrol, natural gas, propane, diesel, and kerosene as well as renewable fuels such as E85, biodiesel and biogas

You must have missed the part where I stated that they are in the process of converting to gas.
Importing the diesel (Which can and will now happen due to the Burgan facility) won't really help the cost issue. Switching to gas will. And it is not Eskom building gas rigs and the rest of the offshore gas field. It is a private company. Eskom will be their anchor client

we are getting raped on diesel and coal prices which Eskom can procure directly from source, BUT choose to go through the massively inflated BEE connected routes, a deftly applied 'fkew' Eskom!

THIS

I saw a figure somewhere that Eskom pays up to R17 per litre of diesel. They buy R1.5bil a month. You and I can go buy the same product at our local garage at under R13 for a litre (coast).

What I want to know is, WTF is the media not making more of a noise about this? Surely garages buy Diesel for closer to R10 a litre? If Eskom bought direct and cut off their BEE tenderprenurs, they could almost halve their diesel bill instead of making us all bite the pillow!!!

Sorry, I meant to say:

Ah I get you.
That is happening as well. There is a LPG (or LNG. Can't remember which) terminal being built at Saldahna (The pipeline from Ibhubesi will join up with it at Saldhana). Saldahna is undergoing a massive change to turn it into oil & gas IDZ / SEZ

They also do not need to pay RAF levy, so it should be a lot cheaper than what you pay at the garage.

“If we don’t have the diesel, then we go into load shedding sooner and it will be more severe,” he said following a briefing on the state of the country’s power system.

So, in essence .... Eskom shagged the goat, and we have to pay for it ... thats what it boils down to.

So bring it, I actually look forward to load shedding. All my equipment is in place, even the wife doesn't care.
