PC bombing out

Ever since I upgraded my pc a few months ago, it's been prone to getting that blue screen o' death for a split second before it resets itself.

This seems to only happen either when I'm using skype (vid+voice and resizing the window seems to aggrivate it) and also when I'm watching a movie through media player 11 beta.

To me it sounds like a video card problem, but don't wanna jump to any conclusions. I've got an Asus 7600GT. Think I should mention that I play UT2004 quite alot, and it has not crashed once during game.

I've done all I can think of; virus, adware, spyware checks, reg cleaner, disabled any rouge looking programmes I find in the task manager. Installed latest drivers for my vid card, mobo incl. latest DirectX. De-clocked my CPU and vid card ...the works.

Any ideas on where I might start to troubleshoot this?

Go to control panel > system > advanced > startup and recovery settings > system failure and disable automatically restart....

Trigger the bsod and note the error code...
Go to Microsoft knowledge base and look it up, there must be an update for it...

All da best of luck...

 N7.1

Thanks Nige, just how do I trigger the bsod, and what is a bsod? :)

@Xen, yup - all up-to-date.

EDIT: Doh, nevermind - blue screen o' death, got it!

It may help if you write down the error number and search google, or the microsoft knowledge base ;) That used to work for me. But I can tell you now, it's either hardware or driver problem.

Hey.

What I suggest is that u reinstall Windows with the latest service packs and updates. After a hardware upgrade, sometimes u will find the machine a little unstable. For that u can just repair the Windows installation, and/or update ur Windows with the latest updates and service packs.

It also could be a memory problem, but looks like in this case that it could be a rare occation.

The final thing that u can try is to update the BIOS to fix memory related issues with the current BIOS.

Good Luck! ! ! ! ! ! !

So I managed to re-create the problem, and the BSOD informed me it was a problem with nv4_disp.dll.

A quick search on google reveals that this is a fairly common problem caused by the drivers of nVida cards. Great. I've tried some different drivers now ...will report back if problem persists...

wow like lightning the IT people jump up fix and return..
