Pc Monitor advice

I've posted regarding the same about 7 months ago. But couldn't upgrade my pc screen due to lockdown and no stock availability after ending. My pc monitor survived and recently began blinking constantly again, a black screen with digital/analog flashing in the left corner and sometimes staying black for 10 seconds at a time.

The monitor I was most interested in was the Dell S2719DGF, the only problem was the TN panel for me. The Dell has now been replaced by the S2721DGF that has 165hz and an IPS panel, selling for R 8 599 at Wootware. Is it worth the price for a 27-inch 1440P display?

I have also heard that with a 27 Inch display you wouldn't need 4K.

The other screen I was looking at is the LG, but I prefer the build of the Dell

Any other advice or ideas for the best buy?

It depends. What do you want from your monitor? The S2721DGF is pure bliss for gaming, but the contrast ratio is around TN level and if you’re fussy YouTube/Netflix will disappoint. It has the wide viewing angles and colors of an IPS which is nice. Definitely worth every cent but only if you’re a gamer.

That LG probably has better contrast but worse color accuracy. If you play FPS 60hz is just disgusting.

One of Dell’s Ultrasharp monitors would deliver amazing picture and a tolerable 60fps if you are only a casual gamer.

About resolution: 1440p is enough , but 4k is going to be the new standard. 1440p is a stopgap. Nothing is going to be filmed in 1440p and scaling 1080p or 2160p to 1440p doesn’t always result in the most crisp image.
Yes choosing a monitor is tough.

Thank you for the solid advice. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I basically play FIFA, Red dead Redemption 2, Metro, and soon Cyberpunk 2077. Only single player though and with regards to movies etc I use the television.

The only other thing I use my PC for is for work, excel and word.

The linked video on the Wootware page of the S2721DGF pretty much states that it is the best choice for 1440p gaming. I'm going definitely going to buy one.

IPS has relatively bad contrast, but it has never bothered me. It has wide viewing angles, and amazing colour accuracy.
VA has great contrast, good viewing angles and decent colour accuracy. It has low refresh rates though.
TN is just fast and sucks in every other regard.

I have an 4K IPS 27", a cheapish 1440p VA, and a Samsung VA TV. I have never felt that my IPS monitor should have more contrast, but I play/work in a okay-ish well lit room.

I will choose IPS all day every day.

1440p vs 4K....
4K might be the future, but there aren't any GPUs out that can reliably drive modern games at 4K 100fps+.
Also, 4K 144hz monitors are crazy expensive.

In my opinion as an amazing 4K 60hz and a meh 1440p 144hz display owner, 1440p 144hz is the preferred option in 90% of games.

The only reason why you might choose a 4K monitor over the 1440p, is if you work on your computer as well, and could really use the desktop real estate. My 4K monitor is 27", and running it at 100% scaling can make it a bit of an effort to read the small text. I need to have it at about 50cm - 60cm from my face to read the text properly.

I just got a Dell s3220dgf (also listed on Wootware sale now, R8999).
It's a 32" 165hz, HDR10 monitor, and its really good. If you do a lot of content authoring, then 4k might be an option. For gaming, for now 1440p is the place to be.

Thank you for your input, I will probably end up buying the S2721DGF in the next month or so.

It's true, the 4K high refresh rate monitors coupled with a Geforce RTX 3090 is way too expensive

I bought a 4K LG from Makro last night, it is on promo (R4999) but seems to be only available if you select to collect in store. Hopefully I will be able to pick it up this coming week.

For me colour reproduction is the most important aspect which is why for the past 3 years I have been happy with a 21" Dell using a VA panel. The LG is an IPS panel so I hope it offers the same if not better image quality as my current Dell.

As for gaming, I play about an hour or so of Xonotic daily and it's perfectly fine on a 60hz monitor for me. The new LG I am getting supports freesync which will work nicely with my APU. My biggest motivator for this purchase was to run my work "computer" which I virtualized in Hyper-V on the one side of the monitor and keep teams/email open on the other side. 4K should give enough screen real estate for that.

That was quick, got the SMS to collect the monitor at 10AM and it is excellent. I was not sure if it had a DisplayPort cable included so I bought one, however it does come with one in the box so you can run it at 4K 60hz right out the box.
