PC Problems

Hi All,

I've been having a problem with my PC that when I turn on the Power just the CPU and case fans seem to be on. The DVD and the hardisks also seem to be working (as they make the noise as when booting) but the Keyboard , mouse or the monitor don't work and the PC does not boot ( no BIOS ).

I then have to disconnect the power supply on the motherboard and sometimes this works but sometimes I have to remove the CPU and resit the CPU before the PC will boot normally.

I did some research on the net and concluded that I needed a new Power Supply so I buy the AOPEN 450W, after installing this the problem still persists. I had a TV tuner card along with Sound card but I have removed these since.

What could be the problem is there some sort of static build up ? The power supply seems to be fine as the same isssue occurs for the new PSU.

Seems like the CPU fails to recognize the PSU or voltages ...

I am clueless,as I don't know much about the PC internals.

Anyone out there with any suggestions about what might be wrong ?

There could be a screw / standoff under the motherboard which is shorting something out? have you inspected the capacitors on the motherboard, they could be bulging, which means they will need to be replaced. have u checked the cmos battery? just a few things off the top of my head...

How old is the motherboard?

Is there a rubber support for the motherboard under the CPU slot. I've had issues before, (Here in Durban, with daytime/nighttime humidity and temperature variance quite high), where the motherboard would shrink and bend due to expansion and compression. This resulted in the CPU contacts not being made properly in the slot. This resulted in shorts. In short, a few fried CPU's later, we realised, and started ensuring we propped up that portion of the board to avoid warping. Seemed to have sorted that out.

You may have a fried Mobo by now, but the fact that it does turn on occasionally is a good sign. But I do think the warping could be an issue. Wherever you mobo temperatures rise when on, prop up with rubber stoppers. Minimizes warping. May or may not help.

Will check on these things when I get back home. Thanks.

Thanks. Where can I get the rubber stoppers ?

most computer stores will have loads of them. They often get bundled with the extra screws for cases. Some stores throw the extras away, some keep them. Or try a distributor like Rectron, Axiz, Pinnacle. They should have. I doubt they would charge you. I went into Rectron asking for a few screws for a chassis, I ended up with 5 kg's of screws, rubber stoppers, etc. They need to get rid of them somehow.
