I used the have the desktop unit and swapped it for I PCMCIA card when I got a laptop. Now I want to know if it would be possible to connect a booster antenna to it and get signal.
When I had desktop unit a placed it the roof with the antenna on top of the roof, got a signal strength of 80%+ (without antenna it was zero). I have been told that there are extension cables (3m, 5m and 10M) available to put between the antenna and the pigtail.
With a flat panel on the roof, 10m extension cable and PCMCIA card, will I get signal?
Or is it an case of trail and error?

Can't really answer your question re the PCMCIA card, but in general I do know that signal degradation is quite severe in antenna to modem cabling, which is why it is much better to to locate your modem as close to the antenna as possbile and rather extend the distance with ethernet cable to your pc.

They told met that the cable has a signal lost of 0.55dbi per 10m of cable.

The lady I spoke to at Webb Industries on Friday morning. Apparently they make the booster antennas and extention cables for iBurst.

Gatecrasher, I agree that using a long ethernet cable is a better idea than using a long antennae cable. If I remember correctly, the Ethernet port on UTD runs at 10mbps so you could in theory run the cable up to 3km..... wouldn't try though :p

It's going to be difficult to locate the PCMCIA card away from PC ;)
(See thread title...)

Yes I agree, but as Unchained said, check the title of the thread. I did have the desktop unit and now have a pcmcia card for my laptop which has no ether net port and I dont want to stick my laptop in the roof and run a network cable in to my room to work on my pc. I prefer the pcmcia card coz I travel alot.

Also rememebr that the actual power output of the utc is dramaticaly lower than the utd.

If you have been supplied the utc pigtail you can run a "bit" of an extension, I'd not recommend more than 2m cable...

My personal suggestion would be to use old pc with pcmcia carrier and place it in the roof. When you get home, plug the utc into the old desktop and use that as a gateway...

Will be the best solution to use a gateway pc in the roof but then I will have to climb everytime in and out the roof when I want to use it at home or when I go out. Not that I am a lazy person but it would be a mission everytime. I am not looking for great signal strenght just want to connect to websites and send emails. Downloads can go while I am asleep.

There is a solution, we have a high gain antenna (18-38dB) at allows you to extent the cable up to 5m + depending on how close you are to the BS. I would need to get the values.
