Hi,

Almost time for a new billing month, and I got some megs left. Thought I'd spend it (since it would be lost in anyway) on some downloading on P2P, like LIMEWARE, old kazaa etc.

Has anyone done this with success? I know HSPDA gives problems in certain upload/download situations.

How safe is it? I heard those apps dumps spyware on your pc. Can imagine megs being used without the pc owners consent....

Report :

Downloaded Limeware startup file.
Ran file, needed to download 3megs to complete installation. Tried about 7 times, each time I would get 5-40 kbps, but after a while the download would drop to zero and die.
On the 8th time, I got incredible speed, 140-200 kbps, and the download went through in 5 minutes. Quite impressive. Installation complete.

I then downloaded a 5 meg file, after searching for it on Limeware, which took about 20minutes, getting between 2 - 6kbps. This probably depends on the host as well.

All the while I was monitoring the situation on ginggs's E620 companion software, and no megs went missing, all megs out and megs in seemed pretty honest. Cool app tx ginggs!

Remember your Upload/Download ratio also counts towards your speed. Leeches get k@k speed :p

Tx for the info ginggs, got 2 questions..

The firewall issue would not affect my download speed, if I'm downloading from an open host, it would only affect uploads from my side right?

If the MTN firewall is an issue, is there any way to disable it for my own connection?

Being firewalled prevents other peers from establishing connections to you and uploading to you, so yes it would affect your download speed. It also prevents you from ever connecting to other firewalled peers.

MTN have an alternate APN you can use, if you're on contract and you call 1555 and ask to be provisioned for it, called MTNVPN discussed in this thread. It sounds like it could do the trick, but I haven't tried it myself.

Sharing a substantial file volume is also beneficial with Limewire..no sharing, hardly any downloads..I share approx 10000 mp3 files and things are buzzing with hsdpa..Sharing so many does chomp the bandwidth a bit though...

I use morpheus to eat up my left over data... dunno if that also works on an up/down ratio but if connected to enough hosts (usually around 5) i get d/l's ranging from 100Kb/s up

As for limewire... does anyone experience any viruses with it? Last time i installed it norton registered a stack of viruses when i ran a scan a couple of days later so i stay well away from it. Guy at work also downloaded it and it completely f***ed up the network. Don't think it was anything i downloaded because i check them as soon as they come in.

Well,If you see 20 mp3`s all shared by 47 identical hosts,be aware..Its silly to go download something that OBVIOUSLY looks suspect..Im running AVG subscription and it picks anything untoward up immediately and quaranteens it.No bad stuff loaded yet.
Be aware when using all p2p stuff...

There are versions of Limewire that have or allow ad ware content..The versions that dont always ask if you would like to upgrade to a newer version..thats the one you want.
I loaded Bearshare a while ago for all of about a nanosecond.Damn, the crap only poured in badly..Immediately removed and sorted it..
