So I was watching this youtube clip of a woman who got one of those ear implants and heard herself speak for the first time (first video here ). You dont hear her speak much, so, fair enough.

In her 2nd video where she gets the second ear implant, her accent is really easy to pick up on (here.

My question: She couldnt have gone long enough with the single implant to have picked up an accent that strong already, so where does it come from if she couldnt hear up until then?

I'm sure there is some blindingly obvious answer here, so feel free to share it :D

Having hearing doesn't solve accents, so clearly lacking hearing doesn't inhibit picking one up. Even the deaf will pronounce words a certain way depending on how they were taught to speak...

It's the natural accent of a human. Best I could come up with.

Well an accent is simply the tone, pitch, etc, etc, of how you formulate sound, and you maintain the same similarity for all pronunciations. If you repetitively do the same action, in this case use your muscles to expel air in a pattern of noise that is considered as an understandable form of communication, aka language via a vocal medium, then you have an accent.

My thumb sucked theory anyway :D.

But how is it that she came out with this fully fledged American accent? I have heard many people who were born deaf who have a unique way of pronouncing their words. I've always thought this is because they can't hear themselves or others in order to imitate the right sounds. If that's the case, how did this chicka learn to not only speak clearly but also with the accent of her peers ?

My logic says to me that in the absence of outside influence, anyone who can't hear themselves speak will naturally revert to a sort of 'default' or 'generic' accent ?

I dunno. Just doesnt compute for me.

Um, because she was taught to speak by Americans in the first place?

Is that to say that the way an American moves their mouth is so specific that anyone who cant hear them will emulate their accent the moment they imitate the movement?

I think I need to find out more about how they teach deaf people to speak.
