People using Club Cabs as Double Cabs

Few things get me so fired up as this; People buying Club Cab (King / Extended / Cab-and-a-half) and then fitting some sort of after market bench seat in the back of the cab.

Firstly its dangerous because from a safety perspective the bakkie was not designed to have occupants in the back. Secondly it is just so blooming cheapskate to the point of being wreck less.

What do the rest of you folks think of this?

Don't like this, but everyone I had this conversation with who is guilty in doing this, normally enters Freeman-mode. Extended cabs are classed as single cabs, law still applies. However a policeman told me that it can be converted legally… not something I argued with, but I have never heard about this conversion in the industry.

Do note that I get along with any person, except those who put themselves above the law. I'm also at times guilty, but under certain conditions, otherwise I will stay within the boundaries, but when someone is wrong and tell me its right, then I blow my thermostat.

I had a supercab once, did not convert it, but i really don't see what the fuss is about from a safety perspective. You can't even open the doors and there's no openable windows in that space.

You can convert that space with seatbelts and all and it will be safer than loading people on the back of the bakkie (which is something i have a much bigger issue with, parents loading their kids on the back and such).

If i look at my current car, and the back seats of that compared to a supercab that is properly converted i would be very surprised if it's less safe.

That said, i understand from an INSURANCE and a TAX perspective it's a totally different story. Insurance and when you're in an accident there's quite a good chance you will be in very big trouble (whether it saved lives or not) , especially since the conversion is most likely not accredited by anyone and tested etc. I know in the past people did it to dodge some tax , so they got a supercab/clubcab and added it as a business vehicle , not sure if this applies still.

But from a practical point of view, i dunno hey, why does the OP care? It's like complaining about people putting in a sunroof or mag wheels. Chances are if said person wanted to transport 3 people, and that's the car he has, he is going to be screwed either way, no matter where he tries to put the 3rd person in, but at least converted seat is in my opinion the best solution other than using a different car...

Now what are the chances of that in a country where it's legal to drive around with people sitting in the bed of a bakkie as long as the sides and rear doors are at least 35cm high? There's not even a limit to the number of people that can be carried back there.

I heard its a pretty straight forward conversion. Fit seat belts and a bench go to license department for Roadworthy and they update your disc.

Don't understand what the big problem is.

It's unsafe and illegal. Taxi operators tried to do something similar with panel vans and this caused nasty looks from the dept of transport. They ended up having to go thru a certified conversion and re-certification.

Yes, they bought Quantum panel vans and converted them. Aside from the weakened body structure you were left with a vehicle carrying 15 people without ABS, something all other Quantum models had.

Sure there is, the people's weight can't exceed the payload. Seriously though, carrying people on the back of a bakkie drives me crazy. I would rather people properly convert their club cabs. I have read that on some countries these bakkies are sold as 4 seaters, and have the places to bolt seats and seat belts. If you have that done, and get it roadworthy I don't really have an issue with it.
