Perhaps Mozilla Should Unfck Itself Before “Unfcking The Internet”

The recent layoffs in August of more than 250 Mozilla employees, a quarter of its workforce, left the company shaking and the community worried about the future of the Firefox maker.

The entire Servo team (A new browser engine in development since 2012), many developers working on MDN (Mozilla’s web development documentation portal) beside people working on various aspects of the company were laid off.

Yet, instead of being transparent on why these layoffs happened and based on what criteria, and what will be the new company’s strategy to increase its current 4% browser marketshare instead of losing it, we get a new initiative from Mozilla called “Unfck The Internet” (Yes, that’s the official name they chose), which as they say, aims to “stop companies like Facebook and YouTube from contributing to the disastrous spread of misinformation and political manipulation”.

But this isn’t just a one-time off initiative from Mozilla. Over the past few years Mozilla has been throwing tons of money and resources on similar social issues and projects of the Internet rather than developing their own main product, which is why they were here in the first place: Firefox.

The whole thing is ominous AF.

With MS adopting an chrome based engine, FF in decline and Safari lagging behind...very close to a browser monoculture controled by the big G

Chromium is open source so I don't quite get that argument people are making. Only negative is webdevs will only focus on one web engine but Mozilla is making sure they do that anyway.

Which is exactly why we should be using FF
It's more insecure though https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/firefox-chromium.html and it doesn't look like things will get better.

Edge is using a Chromium based engine, not a Chrome based one.

The big G doesn’t control anything.

Loads of other browsers are also based on Chromium.

And yet the two never seem to diverge year after year. Funny that...

And yet controversial changes pushed by google (e.g. manifest v3) are now in chromium and edge. Funny that...

If you don't think google controls that eco-system well then I've got a beautiful bridge that I'd like to sell to you.

The chromium home page literally has a big fat Download Chrome button on it FFS...

Loads of other browsers are also based on Chromium.

About 70% and climbing. Hence the problem. One big browser monoculture. One that says FOSS on the tin but actually has google inside. Pretty primitive ploy but apparently is enough to fool people.

It's Google's favorite trick. See Android being FOSS too yet try doing something without Google Play access. Huawei learned that lesson the hard way - the license matters but so does control of the ecosystem.

Year after year you say?

Edge was initially built with Microsoft's own proprietary browser engine EdgeHTML and their Chakra JavaScript engine, a version now referred to as Microsoft Edge Legacy. In 2019, Microsoft announced plans to rebuild the browser as Chromium-based

Not sure what you're trying to say there?

Chromium and Chrome are essentially the same thing. Has always been and will likely continue to be. The only real differences are externally licensed components where it's a question of $$$ and things that are blatantly Google like Chrome branding. The technical direction is essentially the same and choices such as introducing a Manifest that make ad-blocking harder is the same for both. Good thing it's not under the control of a big company that gain most of it's revenue from ads...

MS using Chromium might change that but I doubt it frankly.

Realistically, to unfck the internet you have to unfck the people which is, frankly, impossible. If Mozilla should unfck themselves they will be in for serious change management which won't happen in the short-term or medium terms. They aren't the only company unique to this specific phenomena.

Ignoring that companies are made up from people, and people are different, we sit with a world where everyone is fcuking the economy. One side seeks equality, the other side seeks self-determination, yada, yada, yada.

Anyway, looking at one side of the issue, Mozilla is trying to compete against standardisation. As much as I support choice, it is very hard to be picky when technologies are being aligned in a market and sphere of fragmentation.

Get woke:
On March 24, 2014, Mozilla promoted Brendan Eich to the role of CEO. This led to boycotts and protests from the LGBT community and its supporters, as Eich previously donated US$1,000[26] of his own money in 2008 in support of California's Proposition 8, a California ballot proposition and state constitutional amendment in opposition to same-sex marriage.[27] Eich's donation first became public knowledge in 2012, while he was Mozilla’s chief technical officer, leading to angry responses on Twitter—including the use of the hashtag "#wontworkwithbigots".[28]

Protests also emerged in 2014 following the announcement of Eich's appointment as CEO of Mozilla. U.S. companies OkCupid and CREDO Mobile received media coverage for their objections, with the former asking its users to boycott the browser,[29] while Credo amassed 50,000 signatures for a petition that called for Eich's resignation.

Due to the controversy, Eich voluntarily stepped down on April 3, 2014[30] and Mitchell Baker, executive chairwoman of Mozilla Corporation, posted a statement on the Mozilla blog: "We didn't move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. Mozilla believes both in equality and freedom of speech. Equality is necessary for meaningful speech. And you need free speech to fight for equality."[31] Eich's resignation promoted a backlash as he seemed to have been forced out of the company.[32][33][34]

Go Broke:

In 2020 Mozilla announced it would be cutting off 25% of its staff to reduce costs. Firefox has fallen from 30% market share to 4% in 10 years. Despite this executive pay has increased 400%, with Mitchell Baker, Mozilla’s top executive, being paid $2.4m in 2018

You can see that getting rid of the creator of the world's most popular programming language really paid off.

Facepalm.

Chrome vs Chromium diverging.

What you've got there is a Chome vs Edge comparison. Unsurprisingly Microsoft chose not to ship their product with Google's proprietary tech...
Ah me and SSB misunderstood you.
