Refract Marketing, a small marketing agency in Johannesburg, is looking for an enthusiastic, creative Developer to take control of existing web-based applications and help to conceptualise and create new and interesting solutions for our clients. If you can look at existing code, understand how a system works and have great ideas on how to improve it, this position may be for you.

Responsibilities
As Refract’s developer, you will be responsible for working with our creative team to design and develop various features of eCommerce, web & other custom applications. This includes developing various user interfaces, programming using Perl, Java, PHP and other web-based languages and technologies, integrating the applications with backend databases and conducting various tests.

Additionally, and very importantly, you will be responsible for the takeover, management and continued development of an in-house CMS system currently running corporate websites & client applications. This will require a high level of aptitude to pick up and work with existing systems.

This role provides a diverse opportunity to be creatively and actively involved in the conceptualisation and execution of a number of different projects, as well as the opportunity to pitch your own ideas and explore new areas of development.

Skills & Experience
  • Ideally at least 3 - 5 years’ experience
  • A high proficiency in Perl and PHP programming for web applications and system administration (Minimum Requirement)
  • Experience with Perl, Java/J2EE, HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3, PHP, MySQL, Apache2, mod_perl, SQL, AJAX, XML and XSLT essential
  • Ability to author Perl modules and subroutine packages
  • Solid understanding of multidimensional data structures, references, regular expressions
  • Web User Interface Design experience, Web Programming Skills
  • Experience in systems/database design, development, administration and tuning – preferably MySQL experience
  • Perform complex product design activities, which may require extensive research and analysis.
  • Experience with developing (and troubleshooting) Javascript (jQuery specifically) for AJAX interactions.
  • Linux/Unix command line experience
  • The ability to pick up and continue development and administration on existing systems
  • The ability to clearly and concisely document development work
  • Superb communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Creative and lateral thinking
