Sign up with GoogleA permanent vacancy exists within the disciplines of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on the Westville (Durban) campus for a Principal Tech (IT Systems and Operations).
This is a senior level position where the incumbent is to ensure the management and efficient running of the section's computing systems including various undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research computing laboratories and associated computing infrastructure on the above-mentioned campus. This is an exciting and demanding environment where you will oversee the implementation of various projects, manage crisis situations, supervise staff, research and evaluate new technologies, perform advanced technical installation and configuration of servers and networking equipment, and troubleshoot complex hardware and software problems. In addition, you are to provide expert IT consulting support to the academic staff and postgraduate students and will be expected to identify and introduce innovative methods to continually and reliably improve and upgrade efficiency of current systems. You will be responsible for administering, configuring, deploying, maintaining, tuning and troubleshooting multiple cross-platform servers, workstations and associated network services and technologies in use by the section.
In addition to the minimum requirements listed below, strong LINUX/UNIX experience, experience in writing small scripts, a high level of understanding of IP network environments as well as exposure to server virtualisation infrastructure and storage area networks will be what will secure you an interview.

Minimum Requirements:
- Matric plus a relevant 3 year tertiary qualification in Computer Science or related field
- At least 5 years relevant work experience of which 2 years should be at senior or supervisory level
- At least 2 years experience using LINUX/UNIX
- Practical experience in administering a large heterogeneous network using any one of AD, eDirectory, LDAP, NIS, or similar
- Some programming or scripting experience (e.g. Linux shell scripts, Powershell, Perl, Python, C, Java, or similar)
