Hi,

I do not work in an IT environment and have limited exposure to the industry. For this reason, I want to ask your personal opinion opinion based on yuor knowledge in the field.

I've noticed that ADSL512 was launched 1st, then the slower version (384), and last was the slowest version (192). I've seen the price decreases recently as well, and lately these are becoming 'more affordable'.

However, I still find it expensive. In your opinion, will Telkom launch even slower versions of ADSL? Maybe a 64 for the convenience? Also, do you think ADSL will crack the R500 barrier (in total) during the year 2005? Last question, do you think that 192/384 is going to be more popular than 512?

Thanks

Hi

I believe the cheaper options will be more popular in the medium term. Methinks "competion" will sway uptake in the mid-range products as soon as their options arrive but this will not remain as I am of the opinion that the SNO will work with Telkom later in the game unless gov prevents them from doing so. We do not have true competition in this market because there is no open/free entry to the market.

Sad but true.

Antowan

My 2c worth

If they did drop prices, customer base would grow very quickly... profit should not suffer at all and they may put themselves in a better position to handle any competition, but noooo.... they don't seem to think that....
Convergence bill may do the trick with wireless access through local ISP's - connect wirelessly from a nearby small isp would be the answer to fixed location connectivity in my opinion. I would imagine that sub R500 pm would be possible this way with fixed line costs out the equation.

Unfortunately for the private customer, the presence of the SNO won't make much difference early on. As with all companies that have introduced some form of broadband, e.g. ADSL, Sentech, they always target the businesses first, since this is usually more lucrative because of high concentration e.g. the CBDs of JHB, DBN and CPT.

Sub R500 would only be possible if the bills mentioned are amended and passed favourably.

I honestly think nothing is going to change until the GOV is committed to providing cost effective services in SA. Looking at Vodacom + MTN + CELLC, they definitely have a partial consortium on the go, and therefore do not actively challenge each other in the pricing market; this said because I question that without the GOV's commitment what will prevent Telkom + SNO from doing something similar. The SNO is anyway going to be sharing Telkom network for quite a few years ±15, and they will have some heavy capital expenses to reclaim; what incentive is there for them to start a price war?

Now if Ivy were to allow the VANs in on this equation then this could be completely another discussion...

In a "normal" environement minimum ADSL is considered as 512/128. In South Africa Telkom hardly fulfill this requirements. Anything below this speed I do not consider as broadband.

384 is the perfect speed not to fast not to slow just perfect fits unlike any condom ive ever tried *g*

R580? Is that because you're going through Telkom as an ISP? I want to go through MWEB (had my email address with them for years) and it works out at over R600pm. And yes, R30 makes a difference to me ;0

Out of interest, what was the outcome of the ICASA hearings? Will Telkom do something about it if they are deemed to be expensive?

the outcome is wait for an outcome. Seems the findings from the hearing will still take some time yet.

And even then, ICASA will deliver their findings to the DoC and they will investigate and debate some more about what they can do.

Until we have some decent speeds and cap without protocol shaping
on broadband i will stick to my 128K isdn connection with infinite call.

64 k adsl there is no point ! there is little point int he 192 imo adsl should always be 256 and up. once the service becomes resonable ( 50R line rental and no cap) then it will be very very popular with 384 being most popular i think.

lol, please try not to use an analogy like that ever again (shudder)

I agree with [)roi(]

Until the government step up and do something, it's a lost cause.
Their 39.2% stake in the Telkom monopoly is a big problem - in fact, it's a huge one.

Until someone with the power has the balls to make the change, we'll be lagging behind the rest of the world.

It's a simple choice :-

Loose profit in the short term, but create lots of jobs and give people new opportunities = reap the rewards in the long term.

Unfortunately, our current government doesn't have a great track record when it comes to long term thinking, we can only hope that wisdom will prevail over greed.

R580 is also forgetting you have to pay +- R85 for the normal Line rental as well.
Mine is R330 line (ADSL192)
2Gig R188
Phone Line +-R85
Total = R603
