Petition against new tax regulations for Temu and Shein garners 15,000 signatures

That's where you're uninformed. The quality from Temu is really decent, at least as good as the stuff the local guys import from China. And you can return goods to Temu easily (not sure about Shein).

Also, I'd personally prefer paying as little tax as possible. If you want to donate extra to the fiscus every year you are most welcome. I'm paying more than my fair share already.
Also how many of our local retailers, gives your money or credit back, if an item has dropped in price, not delivered on time, get to keep an item if it's not what you ordered etc.

The blame here doesn't sit with Temu or Shein, it's once again a corrupt government, where the end consumer is not taken into consideration.

I still don't understand why buying clothing online is so popular. Don't you people want to try things on first without the hassle of having to deal with shipping back returns?

I've never once ordered a piece of clothing online.
99% of the time I will not try on clothing when I go shopping in a store.

You can still see what you're buying though and inspect the quality.
That's true.

One thing that i can say is the t-shirts I ordered from Temu were the correct size and they are good quality.

The missus also ordered some tops and jerseys for herself and she is happy with it. She can be very picky and full of sh*t when it comes to clothing.

Maybe we were just lucky.

This is so painfull especialy to people who dont who are not working but they were buying online because off they can afford it, But then in this world its all about rish people

Once again protectionism raises its ugly head - Local greedy top dogs run to the government to complain that people are buying nice things at the correct prices and bypassing their overpriced monopolistic businesses.

People are "rish" ?

Some horrible disease?

My wife did a wardrobe refresh recently with a work bonus. Mix of items from Temu and a fairly large order from Woolworths.

About 12 items ranging from jeans, shirts, hoodies, T-shirts and underwear.

Of the 12 items from Woolworths, 0 were made in South Africa. It's all imported from Asia.

They must stop their support local manufacturing kak.

They just want us to support local middlemen making fat margins buying from Asia.

Also a major issue is the temu vouchers. Temu gives you R700 off R2100 every 3 months. So logically you should pay tax off R1400. Unfortunately you pay tax off R2100 even though you didn't buy it.
So basically from 1 July for buying items worth R1400 you get charged tax of R2100 *60/100 which is 1260. So tax is as much as the cost you bought items. Temu and Shein's whole model is to give you these special vouchers and free items all the time. The end result is the tax will be the same as the item price.

The add the fact with clothing you often buy the wrong size and need to make a new order and pay tax again. It will get expensive really quick.

No you don’t pay tax on the R2100 you could have paid, only on the R1400 you actually paid (excluding shipping).

None of these taxes are new, people should always have been paying them and clothing has always been insane.

They are basically just enforcing it now across the board.

Returns are a problem though, but also somewhat unnecessary as these guys actually give proper sizing unlike the silly locals.

Nope. You pay tax per item value. Each item value has to be declared. If you get credit or a voucher off the total order then it doesn't matter in the customs declaration.

Plenty of examples of people complaining on social media when they think they get free items but have to pay huge customs bills off those free items.

Unfortunately we all have tried to get Buffalo to give us a breakdown of the customs calculation for our orders but they refuse to.

A free item is different and yes you would need to pay the value.

Similarly a voucher/credit has a monetary value so you technically used it to pay for it.

But a discounted item would see you only pay customs on the actual cost incurred. Which is what it seemed your initial post referred to, a discount.

I have never used Temu. Do they also package and ship every ordered product seperatly like wish did?

High-end electronics from Temu are very good. Top brands, good engineering and design

They put all your stuff in one bag unless if it doesn't fit.
If you make 2 orders within a day and they fit in one order they will put both in one bag

I have had 3 orders made in a day split into 2 packages with 2 customs payments to buffalo.

I never mentioned discounts.

I am talking about vouchers not discounts. Temu gave me a R700 off voucher off a total of R2100 so I only paid R1400 for the order. Discounts per item will impact the per item price so is not applicable in my example.
