How much petrol and tolls cost to Durban and Cape Town this December

South African holiday-goers planning to travel long distances by car this festive season will be paying substantially more on fuel and tolls than in previous years.

Petrol and diesel prices have jumped to unprecedented highs in the past year, primarily due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine pushing up Brent Crude oil prices.

It’s probably cheaper to fly and rent a car at your destination.

I mean JHB-DBN is R951 each way, that’s R1902 in total for tolls and fuel with a highly efficient car which probably only exists on paper. Plus the risk of accidents…and the time wasted on the road.

Not if it's a family going down. I had a quick look on the FlySafair website. Assuming 2 adults and two kids, flying out on Saturday morning 17 December and flying back the afternoon of the 7th of January, the total costs for the flights only will be ±R12200.

Was amount of passengers and luggage factored in? Uphills? Kids opening windows and causing more drag? Slowing down and accelerating?
