It's bad base to start calculating regular highway fuel economy at 4l/100km, especially from a Polo Vivo, it should be closer to +-6.3l/100km loaded. Had one as a rental in Durban last week, it did or I did +-8l/100km mixed driving, its a very thirst little car. Very thirsty, also there was no factoring the fact that a returns to the Highveld will increase the economy by more than 15%. With all of this fuel costs will shoot up by atleast 50%, nevermind the thought of full load uphill with that thirsty car will do do, and Im guessing you calculated speed at 85km.... Few will drive at 120km, most will be travelling at about 140km, then we coming closer to a 7l/per 100km.

What 3.0TDI

Did you put that engine in Uno?

Nope the VW Audi 3.0 Engine, there are a few members here that have those engine and they will confirm getting under 5 in highway conditions.

Diesel engines rev very low and gets all the torque low down, so these 3.0TDIs are going 120KMH at around 1500-1600rpm all the way to DBN in D7 and the newer ones in D8
They actually more fuel efficient then their 2.0TDI counterparts because the 2.0TDI revs higher cant remember the exact number but a friend has one and we noticed that. I drive from the West Rand to Sandton with a mixture of back roads and highway and I use about 6.8L per 100Km, driving like a normal person If I hammer it to office I get around the high 7s
Never underestimate having a big engine fitted to a car, I had this opposite expereince when I owned a 316i E36 the car would struggle to carry the weight around esp when you wanted to get there fast.
Very important and from person experience have your car service on time or before, oil changes are cheap compared to engine repairs, Use a quality oil, the one habit I have is I always buy my oil filter from the dealership thats one component I never cheap out on. The oil its self I get from Goldwagen, Liqui Moly seems to be doing a good job oil has always been around the 97-98 mark if I push it once in a while it goes up to max about 102
Another advise dont carry around junk in your trunk I have seen people with their whole lives in the trunk, why ? that weight eats into your fuel
Always make sure your tyres are adequately filled, manufactures states 2.6 I use 2.8 that little extra you give up in comfort you make up for in decreased rolling resistance.
ALso very important check the under tray of your car I see some many cars in passing with the under trays hanging or almost out that is messing with your aerodynamics

Seems like you need a diesel to get these figures realistically

VW/Audi/Porsche/Seat TDi engine, Im asking what car specially, the engine used in the VW group differs greatly, I want to know which particular vehicle. I can agree that they might be vehicles out there with a 3.0 litre engine achieving -5.0 (and some above) I just want to know which one.

Saying that my car is a 3.0 TDI is not enough, it could be anycar for all we know. I can state state that im getting 4.8km/p/litre in my V8, but one would want to know which car, its really simple and basic.

I can put a 3.0 TDi in a bakkie and get 7.0p/100km, there is a big difference, think about it for a moment.

Sorry its an Audi A6 C7.5 gen S tronic gearbox 140K on the clock - full under aero body kit from factory stock tyres 18inch continetals running 2.8bars - oil change about twice a year 0-30Liqui moly 0 Injector cleaner into diesel tank every other month

Ya, now that I can believe. I dont doubt those figures, even from a realistic basis. I was thinking that you might have those old brick shaped VW Touareg SUV's, which would have made those figures very suspect. I have always thought that the larger displacement diesel engines in sedans achieved lower fuel economies when compared to their 2.0 TDI versions, what do you think?

I was also curious about the 3.0TDI being more fuel efficient than the 2.0TDi, personally I think its because the engine has to work less than a 2.0TDI, Not sure what the RPM on final gearing is on the 2.0TDI but on the 3.0TDi in final drive D7 its pushing around 1500-1600RPMs @ 120KMH I think and I stand to be corrected here , the 2.0TDI in final drive is around 1900rpm to 2000rpm - I was looking at the RPM on the 3.0TDI the other day driving on Hendrik Potgieter before the road collapsed in D7 at 1000rpm the car is doing 80KMH.

Heres the kicker I traded in a 1.0 Ford Fiesta Eco boost 3 cylinder for the Audi and the Audi with 3 times more displacement and 3 more cylinders is more efficient than the ford ever was.

With every car manufacturer downsizing engines and taking away cylinders I still believe its better to have low revving high output engine than having a smaller high revving engine.
