POLL RESULTS

We asked readers: "When do you fill up your vehicle's fuel tank?" and a News24 poll garnered 15 993 responses.

When it gets below half a tank - 4220 votes
Once the reserve light switches on - 10173 votes
When the fuel price goes up or down - 1269 votes
I sometimes end up stranded without fuel - 331 votes

The majority of readers (10173) said they filled up once the reserve light switched on while 4220 said half a tank. The fuel price plays a major role in driving habits with 1269 respondents stating fluctuating prices affect their refuelling behaviour.

Alarmingly, 326 said they are sometimes stranded without fuel on the road.

I would hardly call waiting until the reserve light goes on running on fumes.. most reserves are a few litres and enough to get to the garage quite comfortably.

I let it get to just above the reserve light. Sometimes even to the reserve light if I forget. I rarely put in more than 42 litres, which means that with my 50 liter tank, I usually still have 8 litres left, which even in traffic could get me 50km.

Yeah even on a bike when my light comes on I have 60-70km left and that means I can go to work and still back to fill up depending when exactly it goes on.

This is how it should be...no idea what the article is actually trying to say here.

That^^

My "reserve" is 5L, the reserve light could come on in JBG CBD and I could be in PTA East by the time I'm actually running on fumes

What nonsense.
On both my cars, even a good few 20km after the reserve light comes on, when i fill the tank, i calculate between 5-10 l of fuel that i would have left. ALWAYS.
That's 10 to 20% capacity left.
Fumes my a$$

I was always nervous about pushing it because the clock would actually say 0 km left. The other day I forgot about it and I did more than 80km on my reserve, must have glided in to the petrol station.

My reserve light goes on when the PC computer tells me I can still go 120km. It is actually on right now. I will put in R50 on my way home today and fill up tomorrow morning before hitting the highway again to work.

Have never seen my fuel range at less than 50km when the indicator comes on, hardly running on fumes..

Just to get me through to tomorrow and get to the station again tomorrow morning to fill up. I think not putting in R50.00 will be pushing it. When I left the house this morning the reserve light came on and I had 120km to go. When I parked at work it had gone up to 130km (highway driving increases the range) .... but going home again it will drop again and I dont want to get stuck without juice :)

But why not just fill up ?

Have you not been paid yet ?

I wait until the light comes on. Only because my company gives me **** when I use the card to top up. So, the tank pretty much has to be empty before I'm allowed to fill it up again.

+1

Reserve fuel will get you quite far, never worried when the light came on as I could easily do 50km+ on reserve

Maybe he's waiting for the price decrease next week before filling up.

Is it not coming down tonight at midnight? I thought the price adjustments comes into effect 1st Wednesday of the month!!!!!??????? :(
