This is no surprise and we all knew it would happen. The ANC do this every December / Jan. Bunch of w@ncers. I hope they lose this election.

You wish the ANC had that much clout. The reality is that its because of international markets and all the greed that is going on. We are all being fscked over on an international scale. :D isnt it lovely. I really wish I could be an international banker or some guy high up in the finance world. Why did I study this IT technical k@k

manesan : We don't use Brent Crude prices to calculate the cost of our petrol.. we use a different product price.

BUT, I doubt the ANC have anything to do with this... its too complex for them to manipulate, and they're not that good.

So you are telling me that the rand and cost of oil has caused this increase of so much? Please man, it is manipulated by the ANC and I am sure it is for the elections. They need cash.

I think you give the ANC too much credit sometimes. :)

Lol, sometimes but why is the local stuff not less expensive? (sasol)

O wait because originally the "extra" profit was used to pay for the "building" of this "homebrand" so we south africans could be less dependant on the outside world and all that.

Now that extra money is going where? Im sure its not going to the poor or to build houses.

You are blinded by hatred!

Try for a few days to count yourself fortunate for the good things in your life. Perhaps then you'll be able to make a positive contribution to your own life, your family, your country.

We know you don't like the anc, many of us don't, but if you continue to allow yourself to be ruled by hatred you'll never be happy.

I urge you to try!

As for the fuel price, I use diesel both personally and for business so for the mo I'm ok. I don't imagine it will be long before that starts going the wrong way too.

the default answer to all of sa's ills is to blame the anc... so much easier than facing reality!
i'm sure if you scratch the surface u could find that the anc is also responsible for the global economic downturn:D

Marine1 you have to admit that it is only a conspiracy theory. I also sometimes wonder but there are some conditions which enable our economists to follow and predict the flow of the pricing. There are very clever people looking at these things and barring a change in the way we calculate (remember the insane taxes and stuff built into our petrol pricing model) the price and perhaps a larger stockpile at lower prices this up and down will continue.

Do we even have reserves in South Africa anymore?

Well there are plenty that they are responsible for and plenty they must take responsibility for allowing to continue under their noses. They are the ruling party, who the heck else must be blamed, Tinkerbell?

The economic downturn is all of our fault. Economic growth for the sake of growth is not sustainable. Normal profit hunting went into greed overdrive. Car companies ask too much money for their products and have grown their assets (that require maintenance) too large for instance and now cannot afford to keep their workforces, which are too large anyway.

We are already too many people on this planet despite what many people think. We need to curb our global population, refocus the markets not to be all about growth for the sake of growth, but rather be about positive change for the sake of positive change. Make things better, cleaner and smarter...

the government appointed a crony to the strategic fuel fund & i believe the whole majavu et al saga (buying oil from iraq that wasn't usable by our refineries, etc) started there... and i think the fund was majorly f'd up in the process

would not be surprised if this is to pay for the two refinery fires, both the exchange rate and the Oil price have been pretty much stable for the last two months.... which has already seen one ten percent increase

was there not something about funding the ANC via Petroco (sp) last election.... do they not have something to do with refineries, maybe its money for CoPe - either way its less for you and me, and a good excuse to keep those pesky prices up - And while we do not buy Brent Crude (as a habit) it is a bench mark as it is known, it is also a light oil which is easy to refine, normally the thicker oils cost less.... maybe they did not go up so much and therefore go down less or whatever

Does this increase include the usual increase old Trev adds in the budget (RAF and other taxes increases)?

I was listening to Capital Radio 95.8 yesterday and the price of petrol is rising again in the UK as well.

Significant extra fuel taxes imposed today by the government.

Oil prices I think have still not hit rock bottom. The recession has not taken firm hold just yet.

The 'government' were going to impose an extra tax last time round. They did not in the face of skyrocketing oil prices.

The money they require has to come from somewhere.

Dude. You really need to think clearly as much as you want to blame one group for everything that goes wrong remember there is a big bad world out there, a globalised economy and s.h.i.t happening beyond the control of anyone in this country that causes fuel prices to go up.
