Ok...before you read on this is strictly Alfa Romeo...so if you are allergic to the word Alfa...pls don't read further!:D

Me took me Alfa to my machie a month ago to check out the persistent clutch problem...I changed the clutch master cylinder already and the car only has 77000km's on the clock and is 6 years old.

The clutch would get hard and soft like a young kid wathing porn all the time! In the mornings it will be soft, with more use throughout the day, it would get hard....

So machie, who is good at Alfa's, could not find anything wrong with the clutch but me told him about the slippage at 5k rpm...(yes, the 147 can rev till there!:p) he checked it all out and we unanamously said ze clutch must be replaced...

He took the gearbox out and the clutch and checked it out...no problems with it! It looks fine! He took the pressure plate to some ou who will now inspect it, maybe it went...

If the clutch is not the issue...what can be? I'm hoping it's slave seals...so I can get more cash to buy tyres!!!

Solution:

Buy something else :p

btw: For someone who really loves his car, you really do drive it very little. Why is that?
Does the repairs eat into your fuel budget?

Ok well that sucks :(

I had the same problem with my 200STi (Nissan) I still loved that car so much but I kept on breaking it. Wish I can find another one 96 shape :)

Nooo, how did you drive it? Those quick little cars! Aparently if you drove it like you stole it it will give you issues, same like all other sports orrientated cars...coz let's be honest now...200STi means...trash it!

I would try to concentrate on other areas instead of the cylinders, pressure plate etc, since these check out OK.

Is there a vacuum brake booster? And is it also connected to the clutch?

You says that the clutch alternates between hard and soft - have you noticed whether it happens when the engine is hot/cold?

You mentioned that you replaced the clutch master cylinder - did you replace the hydraulic fluid as well? Might be that it picked up water over the past 6 years.

Check the slave cylinder's specifications and tolerances.

Maybe they used the wrong metal for the piston, and it expands (and stick) when the engine is hot, causing hardness and clutch slippage.
