My wife's phone was stolen over the weekend, and we need the ITC reference number from Vodacom for insurance, apparently not so easy, been trying since 11:50.

1.) The phone is from my contract (i.e. I pay monthly for it) , but my wife uses it - Vodacom insist my wife report the phone stolen.
2.) She has been trying - Vodacom keep claiming the systems are down.

Has anyone gone through the process before? At this stage - I'm not suprised people can't be bothered reporting phones stolen...

If the phone is under your name and the insurance it's best for you to report it stolen that way you can claim from insurance. If your wife reports the phone stolen you might not be able to claim as the policy might say something different

Vodacom instisted on dealing with my wife even after I emailed them proof of purchase from when I took out the contract.

I won't have issues with the insurance though... its through our household insurance, thats assuming I can get Vodacom to list the phone.

In the time its taken Vodacom, we've gone to two police stations, and just been SMS'd their case number.

I've blacklisted a few phones. It was a quick and easy process on both Vodacom and CellC - that was a few years ago.

Also, blacklisting is only valid in South Africa. So as soon as the new owner takes that phone across the border, they can use it on foreign networks.
