Photos transfer and cleanup.

Got iPhone 4S to transfer all pictures to the USB stick (as memory is full) so I did by connecting to PC and copy/paste. Problem is that backup size is about 1GB and according to the phone stats Photo Library takes 4.8GB. A hudge difference. Questions:

- Where is a remaining storage?
- Do iTunes will reclaim this wasted storage?
- How to delete photos all at once?

Tried to connect to my iTunes, but my copy is little older, not supporting this phone. Will try updating tonight, but in meantime maybe I can get answers for above, please.

Just launched iTools, it backups all 4.8GB. Confused...

Updated iTunes, this version is working with this phone, but still unable to transfer pictures.
Had been thinking that non-accessible pictures are old deleted items, so deleted one movie and free storage increased, from 0 to 370MB - not the case.

Details: iOS 8.1.2 (12B440), capacity 5.4GB
Setings -> General -> About says Photos 488 (but Camera Roll says 240!)
Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage says:
Used 5.4GB
Available 0MB
Photos&Camera 4.8GB (but transfered to PC only about 1GB)

More than 3GB of photos are inaccessible.

iTools is able to get all photos, so at least the proper backup is done. I think there is corruption in the index file and iOS is ignoring bad entries, cutting off access to 60% photos.

Are there any tools for testing integrity of Flash memory? I don't know what should be done: give the phone to the service centre or perform hard reset, but if it is a hardware problem, it will come back later.

On the phone, do you only have the album/folder Camera Roll?

Do you have any folders ie Favorites, Videos or any other self-named albums/folders that were imported to the phone via iTunes? Maybe an album was added to the phone using a tool other than iTunes and in consequence is not indexed by iOS?

Thanks for reply. There are folders, looks pretty standard:
- Camera Roll 240 (now 239)
- Favourites 14
- Panoramas 3
- Videos 1

When looking at filenames, some groups of numbers are missing, but all of them can be found in the iTools backup. By example:
IMG_0241.jpg
IMG_0242.jpg
IMG_0243.jpg (missing)
IMG_0244.jpg (missing)
IMG_0245.jpg

These holes are spreaded across all numberspace. There are no real holes, the guy never deleted files (I asked - he didn't know how to do it). He never used computer/iTunes. However he already gave the phone to someone else, but this person didn't even know how to access pictures, so I don't know for sure.

Ja, this storage baffles me - if I access the Camera Roll via Windows Explorer there are 7 folders, with images that I have taken at different times in the last three months. They are seemingly at random in these different folders, but none of the image numbers are repeated. Only Steve knows how it works, and he's gone.

Perhaps it depends on iOS version. When I access through Windows Explorer, all 239 files are in a root folder. However iTools shows couple folders as you described.

Edit: It depends how pictures are exported:
- "Export as" gives couple folders
- "Export" puts all pictures and movies in one folder

Phone is still under warranty. Should be taken to the service centre as it is?
I could try reset and updating firmware, but thinking that some log files will be lost. Also having sync problems with iTunes, it hangs at times during sync, so firmware update could fail as well. Only with iTunes, there is no problems when transfering photos using Explorer.

A new version of iOS is 9.2. Yesterday it was reporting something like 8.1.4. Is is worth to upgrade from 8.1.2?

Update: received phone back from Vodaworld service. They upgraded to iOS 9.2 and said they didn't find any hardware fault.

Sounds like the previous firmware may have been corrupt.
I was hoping it was a case, but there is still problem hanging and crashing iTunes during sync.

The first sync was successful albeit of very slow. Then I tried to install some basic apps like Telegram and Whatsapp. It didn't finish the job. Now it stays long (20 minutes) on step 3 "Preparing for sync" and then hangs forever on step 5 "Waiting for changes to be applied".

I don't know what to do. Will try later on other machine running Windows 7, my PC is running XP.

Maybe try a different cable, just to rule that out.

I have a 4s here, on 9.0.1 and it's quick enough on sync. I'm using iTunes 12.1.2.27 with it, no issues.

An update. Installed iTunes on the 3rd-gen i3 laptop with Windows 7 and everything works flawlessly. So it looks like a new iTunes has timeout problems with Win XP or with slow CPU (Pentium4).

iTunes v12.1.3.6 is definitely not working properly on my older machine. Since upgraded to this version I am unable to sync wih my iPhone 4 as well. Looking now for a copy of the older version, which was working better.

Thanks, didn't start looking yet. :)
Getting problem with this link, as it says the latest version supported on XP-32bit is 12.1.1, but allows to download 11.4. Anyway, found in backup the copy of my old version 11.1.3.8.

Installed old version, blue icon looks less intimidating. Now is a serious problem, it won't open:
"iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created a newer version of iTunes".

Quick search seem to give result:
Close iTunes and go to your iTunes folder. Enter \Users\[Username]\My Music\

Next, find the files labeled iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl. Delete them
