Pick n Pay waving goodbye to Eskom

Pick n Pay wants to ditch Eskom in favour of alternative electricity sources, the grocery retailer's CEO Pieter Boone revealed during an interview with SABC News.

The company says it is investing in alternative sources to keep its operations afloat and is in discussions with landlords to end its reliance on South Africa's national power grid.

I think after enough loadshedding my neighbourhood would probably end up building its own solar plant

Soon I see most companies, that can, go this route.

If only our roof space matched our energy demand :(

It is not rocket-science to see that private business, where they can, will get off of the Eskom grid. Just a matter of time when the financial impact of load shedding hits the bottom line.

Use google satellite view and go check your shopping center roofs, A lot of them are covered in solar panels.
I think it’s more to just get through load shedding than completely off grid systems.

I encourage & applaud all the rich okes of mybb to have solar panels likewise. I am reasonably confident that Eskom should be able to supply to the rest of us.

Was doing just that and this pic:

Got me thinking....

If all the big mall's push out solar is it not gonna increase temp, cause instead of most of the light being reflected its gonna be absorbed. (Only 27% gets generated into electricity on a good day).

There has to be some studies done re the effect of sooo much solar to global temp?

Edit: Neva mind.

The benefits of solar panels still outweigh their drawbacks, though. Realistic large-scale solar panel coverage could cause less than half a degree of local warming, far less than the several degrees in global temperature rise predicted over the next century if we keep burning fossil fuels

I don't see how people can see this as good news.

Let me explain Eskom economics to you:
Eskom budgets on an income of X, whether they supply 1kW or 100mW they want X as income. That is why they tell us to use less, but expect us to pay 35% increases. We use less, so they try and make up the deficit by pushing increases to hit X. Now, P&P is gone, who do you think Eskom will want to pay that Deficit?

Eskom, the only company in the world who wants you to not use it's service but pay for it. Use less = Pay more.

How much surface area do shopping malls cover in a city? Cities are already hotter than the countryside because of all the tar and concrete.
