An estimated 11 houses have been burnt in a fire in St Francis Bay on Thursday, the Kouga Municipality said.

"The fire has been contained, but the situation is being closely monitored in case of flare-ups," spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall told News24.

She said dampening and mopping up was underway.

Two helicopters and 85 firefighters battled the blaze at Lyme Road North.

Shame, they really need to do away with the thatch. At least cover it in tiles.

The thatch really brings charm to the place.

What they need is sprinkler systems installed on the roof. I saw such systems on the thatched roofs at Berg-En-Dal at the Kruger and thought it was a really good idea.

Why people still build houses with thatch roofs is beyond my understanding. They are full of bugs and creepy crawlies, very expensive to insure, look like medieval homes, almost impossible to sell and regularly burn down.

And pest control prices.

And yet thatching roofs is a thriving business down there. People are stupid.

In St Francis, its one of 3 allowable materials for roofing pretty much...

You are under the control of an Aesthetics Committee...

The owners should sue their HOA to cover their insurance premiums if they want to have a stupid rule like that, or just not buy a property in St Francis.
