If you're suggesting live rounds then that would make you as savage as them looters, ironic actually.

The reality is you can't kill somebody for mere theft as that would be ethically wrong and legally be murder, you can however disperse the mob with some solid rubber bullets, you can bet they won't line up to loot next time! :D
I wonder if they asked the driver to stop, aksed him to graciously to stand aside offering him a chair while offering him refreshments, before they started their plunder. We know these are such nice people.

History and personal experience says it normally does not happen like that. So I suggest there might be a bit more than mere theft.

There's 2 groups at play here, the people/gangs who throw stones at passing cars and trucks, those people are murderers and should be treated as such.

Then there's the opportunistic bottom feeding scum who loot and steal after the fact....these are the same thieves who steal from a truck that meets up in a normal accident...some of these people are so ignorant that they just believe it's their lucky day like finding R100 lying on a deserted street. That ignorance can be easily cured by rubber bullets and mass arrests, and then broadcasting it to media country wide.

Now i'm not saying either party is justified however different punishments would apply to both groups.

What a waste of a life, what a pity every persons house that has goods in isn't charged with accessory to murder.

RIP driver, you didn't deserve to die over a frikken TV

I suppose soon the cost of nice things will just go up as they start traveling in armed convoys which is what is needed.

If that is true these scummy bastards would be fully deserving of live rounds.

Well now this isn't ethics class, but you don't kill somebody for petty theft if your life isn't in immediate danger.

Surely I don't need to explain this to you Sunbird???!!

Why calling it petty theft? And not just theft or break-in or even robbery?

Medieval level lawlessness, roving bands of brigands.
We need medieval techniques to deal with these.
Every action has an equal opposite reaction.

True, but it's also more complex. I think we are agreed on the first group.

The second group is problematic. The first group would not succeed with the shelter the second group affords them. It is not in their self interest to do so. It's also that this group that the first claims ot belong to when investigations begin, with the second group saying nothing.

So we go round and around, playing these games. But bottom line, the first group would not succeed with help of the first. They are accomplices, either directly or indirectly. As for punishment? Shooting with sharps is perhaps a bit overboard, but they should equally not get off lightly.

Because stoning a truck and then looting it is petty theft yes. He is a criminal apologist.

Not at all, what happened here is totally out of line, the only place I might divert is with how I suggest we deal with the problem/punishments.Some people are unfortunately still very ignorant they've been led to believe by their people that something falling of a truck means it's your lucky day,now they just climb on the truck to make it fall off!

You can't shoot and fight everybody,we need to be made to understand that's not how things work,a mindset change is what's needed.

Long term yes, but a short term solution is needed. This is criminal, it's no different to walking into a shop with a weapon and holding up the owner. This is almost worse because the way they stop vehicles could lead to the death of the driver.
