Thanks for the offer but I'll just borrow a Netgear ADSL router from home to double check this afternoon.
An unnecessary call out charge is R 1,039.68 :wtf:

Cool, could you keep me posted on your findings/progress?

UPDATE: Telkom techie phoned me early this afternoon out of the blue asking me if I can test my connection. I wasn't home which upset him (???). Just got home and I'm able to connect again. No details on what he did to fix the problem aside from 'he's working at the exchange'. I'll press him for details should he phone again.

Just got a phone call again from the Telkom techie and he said it's a configuration mismatch. Paul if you can drive to the Telkom exchange right now I reckon you could catch the guy and get him to sort out your line too. He asked for your landline but obviously I don't have that.

I just had a phone call from the technician.
My line is up as well now. :D
He said there was configuration problem on one of the cards so he reconfigured it and reset/rebooted the card.

Surely Telkom could have checked and fixed this remotely instead of taking 5 days to attend to the problem?

On the plus side at least now we know we're both on the same card so should a similar problem arise that affects both of us again we'll know where to start looking.

Good stuff, sounds like we spoke to the same guy. Glad you're sorted!

Hi
Since the thunderstorm Saturday I have been experiencing very slow internet speeds, I'm suppose to have a 2 MB ADSL line, yesterday I still got something like 600 MB down and 120 up, but today it's totally dead. MWeb (my ISP) says they can still see that my line is syncing today, but at very slow speed something like 700.

Something totally different,
From where the phone line enters the house I have a 10 m phone cable through the roof to my room where the router is. For the past year or so I have been using a MWeb FON router but this passed December it stopped working the line whent dead. When plugging out the 10 m cable going to the modem the phone worked fine again so obviously I thought the modem is bust. I asked MWeb to exchange the FON router but the new one they sent me do exactly the same, if plugged in the line is dead but if I plug it out the line and phone is working again. Thing is the line is fine if my very old Telkom Mega 105 router is plugged in via the 10 m cable, it's just the FON routers, I even tried a brand new 10 m cable but have the same results.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Regarding your first problem, have you tried getting Telkom to reset the port? That's supposed to help with lines that sync at slow speeds as far as I know.

No idea what the problem with the router might be though.

MWeb got Telkom to reset the port, recreate the port whatever, I'm just doing some more testing and will then log a folt with Telkom.

The problem with the routers totally have me stumped though.

I also live in PVR and struggle with connectivity from time to time (or rather most of the time). My line gives problems at least twice a year. Normally it's caused by lightning which basically melts the insulation causing the wires to touch.

It also seems to break on the same spot every time. The main problem is poor quality cables. The copper seems fine but the insulation can be ripped with your bare hands (without stripping tool). I know this because I normally watch the telkom techie fix my line every time in the manhole just outside my flat. I once took a piece of the cable that they cut off and was able to rip the insulation from the copper with my fingers.

Just a tip. Get yourself a Billion or Netgear router. They are very stable even on bad lines. One occasion, my line did not even make proper contact but my router was able to sync. It synced at a lower rate but I had internet. I tried 3 other routers but only Netgear and billion was able to sync.

Once again, I have a line problem (call logged 19/04/15) but I can sync at least and latency is not really an issue (not that I can notice).

I normally monitor my line stats on the router and currently SNR is currently 6db and line ATT is currently 66db (Down stream) which should not even be able to sync. Current sync at 2048 but should be 4096.

I wish Telkom will rip out that *** cable and put Metro Ethernet (fiber) for PVR.

If you Pvr residents aren't aware of it yet, Telkom is busy digging trenches for VDSL (limited pvr coverage though)
Check it out here http://www.telkom.co.za/coverage/

On the down side, it looks like they destroyed some copper in the process. My line's been dead for 2 days now; no dial tone and no DSL.

ADSL managed to sync after the rain last night LOL; its very unstable though :(

Mr.Jax,

Out of the blue I received a SMS last Wednesday to inform me that there is a ADSL outage in the area and it could possibly affect my service. Telkom also quoted a reference number and said they will inform me as soon as the problems have been solved. Well, till date no outage on my side and no further correspondence received.

I also received the SMS; that issue (7226) has apparently been resolved, however I'm still without a dial tone and DSL sync.
Fault reported, now we wait. 6 days and counting :(

Sadly no VDSL rollout for me. I'm keeping all fingers crossed that the uncapped LTE deal will be offered in PvR at some point in the not too distant future.
